Working with Nowness on their LOVESICK series, but they also cared to ask me what my favorite non-lovesick videos were, which is always nice.

Please join us for our third Soft. Core. Exhibition with our guest curator, Alexis Hyde. Opening Reception: January 27th 6-9pm 428 S. Hewitt St LA, CA 90013 I want to feel indulgent. I want art for art's sake. I want beauty for no reason at all. Nonsensical movements and colors and patterns for no other reason than we can. More delicate, less sturdy. Sick of logic and reason and worry and anxiety. Looking for luxurious gestures and unforseen consequences. Less planning. More execution. More confidence. Less outlines and more as it lays. The result of these impulses is Formless and Fragile, a one night pop-up in the Los Angeles Arts District of artists who indulge in similar instincts. Who are pursuing beauty and abstrction and absurdity and journeys with no end. Enjoy yourself. We are.
Aya Cash and Alexis Hyde in Paper Mag
Cash: As a culture, overall, I think we value interpersonal relationships above most— like, Alexis, you're single.
Hyde: I'll let you play with my Tinder when we're done.
Cash: Everyone expects you to be actively looking—or else something is wrong with you.
Hyde: Most of my hours are at this museum. When I do look, it's vastly unsatisfying. The problem is sometimes you just don't find people. You know, I'm wrapping my head around that. It's fine. But, people's knee jerk reaction— Oh, you'll find someone. Well, no, that's not true. I might not.
Cash: Or you might find someone who is amazing for a few years and then not. But, this idea of a forever person . . .
Deeper Thoughts with Hyde or Die
We spend an insane amount of time trolling through Tumblr looking for our next features - chances are we do get tripped up looking at fashion and design...sky's the limit on Tumblr. And that's what we love about it.
But admist our dashboard, there are a few blogs we look at religiously because they dig a bit deeper and really seek to not only entertain but to educate.
Which is why we decide to highlight them in a new feature we're calling 'Deeper Thoughts' on Tumblr. Our first profile is on Alexis Hyde of the popular art blog Hyde Or Die.
HAHA: Why do you do what you do?
AH: Honest story? I started my blog (oh my god) 4 years ago as something to do to pass the time at my dreadfully boring receptionist job. Against the rules? Oh yeah. But it got me through the day. Later that year I saw that the Warhol Foundation was giving out grants to art blogs. I already (kind of) blogged about art so I switched it to art full time in a bid to get the grant. I didn't get it, Art Fag City did (love you Paddy), and I kept on blogging. I was hooked. It forced me to stay current and go out and see what was going on and exposed me to a million new artists. Always learning.
HAHA: How much time you put into maintaining this Tumblr?
AH: Yikes. Depends on the week. My new job is more demanding on my time so I will usually spend a few hours over the weekend/after work queuing up the weeks posts, unless some breaking news happens and I'll post right away. I've only just fixed my iPhone Tumblr app so I can start posting from the streets again. It's very exciting...for me.
HAHA: How you go about picking the subject material?
AH: I wish I had some rhyme or reason to it, but most of the time it's just whatever strikes my fancy. I'm sure it has something to do with the collective consciousness too though, what galleries are doing shows, what artist is doing what. I read these things and they stick in my brain and I don't even realize I have posted 5 artists from one gallery in a day.
HAHA: Got any tips for aspiring art bloggers?
AH: Keep reading and keep seeing -as much as you can. If you can't afford museum passes, go to galleries. Don't be afraid to take pictures. If you are afraid? Don't be afraid to ask if you can. Also, try not to take it personally when no one is interested in your favorite pieces. That has been the constant theme of my blog, if I love it? The internet won't. If I just throw it up there haphazardly? The next thing I know it has 700 notes. Can't take anything personal on the internet. Ever.
