The Local: Alexis Walter

Meet Alexis Walter, the muse to many a NOLA interior designer whose works of art echo the many layers of our beautiful city. Alexis creates abstract impasto and watercolor paintings that bridge the gap between antique and contemporary décor, work within a variety of design genres, and present rich new colors you’ve never quite seen before. It’s no wonder Alexis is a darling in our local design scene. Read on to get to know her better.

The Inspiration

Envisioning a beautiful room has always been the first step in my creative process. Whether a French chateau from travels or a mid century modern home around the corner from my Uptown studio, I paint with a feel of a room in mind.

Lifestyle

While I’m painting, and often before I set brush to canvas, I’m envisioning the frames on the wall, the curtains that adorn the windows, the perfectly fluffed pillows, and the “craft” cocktail napkins to complete the room of my dreams.

Fun Fact

I actually paint in pairs. This is a technique I honed while working with local design legend, Gerrie Bremermann, who frequently placed my work in her designs in pairs. Gerrie’s love of symmetry compells her to select smaller pieces to be placed as a vertical over a horizontal to provide great spatial impact. The great impact this design has in a room has really influenced the way I paint, even from the very beginning stage.

The Finishing Touch

Frames make all the difference when hanging any art! I learned everything I know about framing from Gerrie. She selects hand-crafted, artisanal frames to tell her design story. What I love is how Gerrie chose smaller pieces adorned in these artisanal frames rather than commissioning a large canvas to cover a wall. The end product really complements the artwork and creates dimension in a room.

My Expert Advice

I believe every home should be adorned with original art, so I paint on boards, canvases, and paper to provide attainability for all. You don’t have to have a Gerrie Bremermann designed home to hang a piece of my artwork in it. If you wish for high design on a budget, select a painted board and dress it up with a frame. Boards do not require a mat or glass, so it costs less to have it framed. You can also learn from Gerrie and consider placing pieces in pairs, specifically a vertical over a horizontal. Pairs create symmetry and if placed together, take up real estate.

Shop Talk

I’m really excited about the recent launch of my textile line, Alexis Walter Maison. I designed nine different patterns, all inspired by my personal garden and artwork. I like to think that these designs will dress up any accoutrement in the home, from your dog’s bed to your window panes. They have all been printed on this gorgeous Belgian linen, plus we also have pillows and cocktail napkins available. Everything in your home should tell a story—from the furniture you sit on, to the drinks you serve!

How I NOLA

We love the early bird Friday night 8 o’clock Ellis Marsalis show at Snug Harbor. It’s the sweetest little spot and the music is amazing.

My garden is my favorite place in the world. Right now my roses are blooming and it’s making me extra happy! We were a little behind on planting our fall and winter veggies this year so they’re still small but soon enough we will be harvesting all sorts of beautiful heirlooms lettuces, radishes, Swiss chard, cabbages, broccoli, and cauliflowers!!

Since we now have the ability to decorate our own home “expertly” with the help of the Internet and Pinterest … we have a much higher margin of error. So we aren’t doing full room makeovers ,we are investing in one piece at a time.

Only from a New Orleans Garden

Only from a New Orleans garden do you get oysters and crab claws! Alexis Walter invited me over to her studio for a catch up, and she treated me to first class cuisine straight from her garden including apple/lemon verbena Veuve cocktail, marinated crab claws and okra, and raw oysters with homemade hot sauce – and shared the recipes too! It was an afternoon of business, friendship and love of all the reasons why we live in New Orleans. 

Alexis’s Art Studio is housed in her backyard, so when she is not hard at work, she can tend to her garden for therapy, fun, and Dan’s dinner! Here’s a recap of what’s growing and what’s going…

By early fall my favorite summer vegetables (tomatoes, squash, cucumber) have called it quits but my peppers, herbs, and okra are still going strong. They love the cooler weather. My peppers are at their peak and will continue until our first frost. From now until December I’ll have baskets full of them. I’ve never learned how to truly preserve (eek- botulism!!) but have found a few ways to keep the peppers around most of the year. I make quick hot sauces with the hot peppers and roasted gypsies peppers. To keep the gypsy’s from spoiling, I roast them and cover them in olive oil. They’re great to have on hand for cheese boards, appetizers, and last minute dinners. The gypsies are great for small gardens because the plants stay fairly compact. They also ripen quickly- in about a third of the time it takes a bell pepper to ripen.

We went to Spain this summer so I planted a bunch of Spanish peppers since I was in a Spanish mood. Corno de Toro peppers, Padron peppers (which can be used as hot peppers once they turn red), piment d'espelette and Ají Dulce peppers, which are used in Carribean and Latin American cooking. They’re my favorite because they’re sweeter, frutier, and a little less hot than habeneros. Perfect for hot sauce.

I have several basil varieties in the garden but my favorites are the purple varieties. Thai basil is great for cooking but also looks so pretty in flower arrangements. Purple ruffle basil has the prettiest ruffled leaves with flecks of green. I always have tons of oregano. We used it as a ground cover in our front yard. Parsley loves this time of year and will quickly take over the apple parterre.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of okra until we planted Burgundy okra. It is much more delicate than regular green okra and is the most gorgeous hot pink and chartreuse when ready to be picked.

After a few glasses of champagne, we went into the studio to paint! I am a huge fan and collector of Alexis Walter Art, but this was the first time I actually saw the process..thrilling!! It truly is such an emotional experience to see art come to life. She begged me to pardon the studio chaos to which my response was someone is getting ready for High Point!! 

ALEXIS WALTER’S RECIPES

Apple/ Lemon Verbena Champagne Cocktail

Apple Lemon Verbena Simple Syrup

1 cup water

1 cup organic cane sugar

1 cup cored & chopped apples

¼ cup lemon verbena leaves

Makes 2 Cups

Simmer all ingredients together until the apples are soft. Let steep until cool. Strain with chinois or fine mesh strainer. Refrigerate until cold. Add a splash of simple syrup to a champagne glass and pour champagne. Garnish with a sugared verbena leaf.

Hot Sauce

2 cups of whole stemmed red Ají Dulce Peppers (any hot pepper will work. The sugar and salt might need to be adjusted.)

1 cup of roasted red & orange Gypsy peppers,de-stemmed

¾ cup of apple cider vinegar

1 teaspoon of organic cane sugar

1 teaspoon of salt

½ cup of sliced onion

2 cloves of garlic

1 tablespoon tomato paste

Non-reactive glass container with lid

Sautée onion. Add all ingredients in your blender, hold your breath, and blend.  The air gets pretty spicy right about now. Pour in to a sterilized jar. Cover jar and refrigerate for two weeks for best flavor.

Marinated Crab Claws

& Okra

1 cup of shallots

1 cup of parsley leaves

½ cup of basil leaves

¼ cup of oregano leaves

2 cups of extra virgin olive oil

2 cups of champagne vinegar

Juice of 6 lemons

2 tablespoons of salt

1 tablespoon of pepper

1 4” hot red chili, pierced with a fork a few times

2  pints  of crab claws

½ of a pound of okra, cut in half lengthwise

Chop the shallots, garlic, parsley, basil, and oregano. Combine all of the ingredients. Refrigerate for 4-6 hours. This marinade works wonderfully with boiled shrimp too.

Since any smart chick knows that oysters and crab claws don’t come from the garden, Alexis recommends Langenstein’s for high quality seafood any time of year. And my tip to you, snatch up Alexis’s art. I have a special piece next to my bed, so its the first thing I see when I wake up in the morning. If that isn’t enough, I have three pieces in my living room. You can never have too much of a good thing! Art, champagne, friends and a bountiful garden!
