From Star Trek to The Invaders

After the first pilot was rejected, Star Trek was almost completely recast with the exception of Mr Spock (Leonard Nimoy). The first episode of Star Trek aired on September 8, 1966. While The Man Trap was the first episode to air, it was actually the 6th one produced. Supposedly it was chosen as having more action than the other episodes. It was also supposedly one of the least favorites of Leonard Nimoy and William Shattner. The episode took place during 2266 (eleven years after the events of The Cage, which was the original pilot and later recut as The Menagerie). The episode introduced Captain James T Kirk (William Shatner), Dr McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Yeoman Janice Rand (Grace Lee Whitney), Sulu (George Takei), Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), and (off screen) Montgomery Scott (James Doohan). Today in the Department of Before They Were Star Trek Stars, Grace Lee Whitney appears in "The Andrew Elliott Story," episode 21 of the seventh season of Wagon Train (original air date February 10, 1964).

Whitney plays Nora, a saloon girl who joined two off-duty cavalry officers on an ill-fated expedition across the desert on a search for a shortcut to the gold fields of the West coast. Their story is told in flashback when their hired guide, the expedition's only survivor, who is now working for the wagon train, is questioned by one of the officers' Senator father and the other's commander.

Nora's lover, the eponymous Andrew Elliott, is played by Skip Homeier. He made not one, but two appearances in The Original Series: first as Space Nazi Melakon in "Patterns of Force" and second as Space Hippie Dr. Sevrin in "The Way to Eden."

Alfred Ryder played the cavalry commander in "The Andrew Elliott Story" and the salt vampire's willing victim Professor Robert Crater in the Original Series episode "The Man Trap."

Herschel Daugherty, the director of this episode, also directed the Original Series episodes "Operation -- Annihilate!" and "The Savage Curtain."

The writer of "The Andrew Elliott Story," John Kneubuhl, was one of the original writers of the story that became the Original Series episode "Bread and Circuses." However, by the time it reached its final form so many of his ideas had been edited out that he was no longer eligible for screen credit.

This last cut is so deep we may encounter Horta in the lowest level of the dilithium mine. You see the gentleman with the newspaper under his arm, glancing at Teri Garr as he passes her on the sidewalk in the Original Series episode "Assignment: Earth?" His name is Edwin Rochelle, and he was the stand-in for Robert Lansing (Gary Seven) on this project and many others. He also had a blink-and-you'll-miss-it part as a bartender in the saloon where Nora works in "The Andrew Elliott Story."
