After the first pilot was rejected, Star Trek was almost completely recast with the exception of Mr Spock (Leonard Nimoy). The first episode of Star Trek aired on September 8, 1966. While The Man Trap was the first episode to air, it was actually the 6th one produced. Supposedly it was chosen as having more action than the other episodes. It was also supposedly one of the least favorites of Leonard Nimoy and William Shattner. The episode took place during 2266 (eleven years after the events of The Cage, which was the original pilot and later recut as The Menagerie). The episode introduced Captain James T Kirk (William Shatner), Dr McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Yeoman Janice Rand (Grace Lee Whitney), Sulu (George Takei), Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), and (off screen) Montgomery Scott (James Doohan). Here’s another photo from when De, James Doohan, Gene Roddenberry and some of the production staff visited NASA in 1967.

I like this photo as it puts faces to the names we’ve seen in the Star Trek series end credits.

De is referred to using his real first name (Jackson). I’ve never seen him referred to professionally as Jackson. The photo also calls out James Doohan’s and some of the other’s middle names. Maybe they had to use their full names when getting clearance into the NASA facility and then NASA used those names in their press release. I’m thinking too much about all of this, but I obviously enjoy obsessing on DeForest.

Happy birthday to the late, great Marc Daniels, director of several Star Trek TOS episodes. He also appeared in “The Changeling” as the image of Jackson Roykirk, the early 21st century designer of the Nomad space probe.
