Beck, backstage Lollapalooza, Randals Island NYC, July 29, 1995, snapped by Allen. Allen: What do your parents do? Beck: Well, my mom doesn't do anything right now. She's actually taking care of my grandfather -- did you know Al Hansen? Do you remember that name? Allen: Painter? Beck: Yeah, and he did collage stuff. Hershey... Allen: I have one of them. Beck: You have one? Allen: He was a friend, and he sent me one -- Beck: He was my grandfather. Allen: -- of those Hershey Bar things, or collages Beck: He just passed away a couple weeks ago. Allen: Yeah, I read in the paper. Did you know him well? Beck: Oh, yeah. I spent a lot of time with him. Allen: He was pretty smart. Beck: At one point I went to live with him. He's been over in Germany the last 20 years because it's a lot easier to make a living as an artist over there. Allen: Did he teach you how to collage and all that? Beck: I never got into that with him. I just spent a lot of time -- Allen: Pretty interesting. Beck: Yeah. He was amazing. I learned a lot from his speech. The way he talked. He had the whole sorta 40s jazz/ hipster talk. He was a zoot-suiter in the 40s. Allen: I had no idea you came out of Hansen's. He was one of the first of the great pop artists, because of the collage. Beck: He was completely unacknowledged.
