This is a recreation of The Meeting on the Turret Stairs (1864) by Frederic William Burton. Credit to the wonderful @soulhollow for giving me the brilliant idea and commissioning this 💚

The costume design for Alfred

They said they wanted to see Alfred in purple/gold tones, so I self-indulgently designed a costume for Alfred (though again not necessarily trying to be historical accurate)

Details for archaeology nerds (So it happens again I guess)

1. The tablet-woven bend

Design is loosely taken from an actual archaeological find from the Taplow Barrow in Buckinghamsire, dating to the early 7th century. The original piece really had the gold threads on it by the way. You can see the modern reconstruction here.

2. Pattern on the tunic

Taken from a part of an arcade illustration in the Royal Bible (Royal 1. E. vi, 4r.) c. 1000-1025 in British Library, London. Added some vine patterns that are quite common to see in insular art for reasons.

3. Pattern on the shawl

Taken from a part of the stole and the maniple in St. Cuthbert’s coffin, dated to early 10th century, now in Durham Cathedral Museum.

4. Embroidery on Alfred’s sleeves

The pattern is from an illustration in the manuscript of Bede’s Life of St Cuthbert (MS 183, f. 1v) c. 937 in Parker Library, Cambridge, which depicts King Æthelstan showing the book to St Cuthbert himself.

I initially wanted this to be two separate images - the "shepherd" and the "wolf", that, when pieced together would become a full image. Then ... I got lazy. :D

But I wanted to share this version with the gridlines to show how the picture can be split in half, and barring one little lamb getting chopped, it's still quite symmetrical lol.

Some chaotic wip ... ik they say trust the process but i'm more-so resigned to it lol. ʅ(°ヮ°)ʃ

So I just want to share a little story: I showed this to my friend, and I was telling her how I initially drew Alfred looking towards Uhtred, like his head tilted back a little, but somehow I felt this pose was better. And she said, "he doesn't need to look, because he trusts him to follow." AND I WAS SOBBINGGGGG 😭😭😭

So I just want to thank my genius friend for saying that, I can't claim to have thought of it, but I fully accept it as canon for this picture lol. 🥹

I Need more dialogues where people refer to Uhtred as Alfred's dog. I need Alfred to say "Yes, he is my dog and therefore I am his master. Beware my Lords, he bites on my command". I need Alfred to see him as a beast, and pet him when he knows it will have an effect on Uhtred. I need him to reward him and then scold him, I need him to keep him on a leash.

I need Alfred calling Uhtred's name and Uhtred trotting by his side even if he doesn't want to. Because he was taught so and he obeys him.
