the thing that hit me the most in this episode is the death of a woman who died in police custody due to neglect. It is so mean and hateful to let a woman die who has been complaining in agony about being in pain and be so indifferent to her humanity that it isn’t even seen as a big deal. And she was in prison for something so mundane and bureaucratic as not paying a fine. What fine is worth someone’s life?

Last year I was fortunate enough to win a traineeship in the Black and Write! Indigenous Writing and Editing Program through Queensland State Library. This involved editing training and prepping manuscripts via correspondence, and then eventually having the opportunity to travel to Brisbane for a week to undertake more training. I also was blessed with the opportunity to work with established writers Marie Mungkara, Ali Cobby Eckerman, and editors Ellen Van Neerven Linda McBride and Sue Abbey.  I'd never been to Brisbane before, so this was a bit exciting. Especially having a big ol' fancy motel room to myself.
