Just wanna say that every single one of your OCs is amazing. They're all so cool! How do you keep coming up with such awesome characters
GAH! Thank you so much I’m glad to hear it!
Ironically, I often struggle with initially designing chatacters, but find redesigning and working on pre-existing designs super fun, haha.
Here’s some tips on how I approach designing characters though!
My general suggestion is setting limitations! Because of how I set up my OCs’ world it makes it easier for me, but these are the loose guidelines I try to follow:
- Characters should initially have a strong visual vibe and personality that can be summarized in a short sentence (or 1-2 words).
Ex, Kohn should appear angry/sharp/intimidating at first. Later on I can add more elaboration as the viewer gets to know him better (and even recontextualize certain assumptions)
- I simplify my character designs by drawing them as pixel sprites so I can spot and cut unnecessary details. Chibis work too!
- Having other people draw my designs and interpret the character can lead to a lot of interesting takes and often they have incredible ideas I probably wouldn’t have thought of!
Art trades, commissions, and drawing together all work for the above! Shoutout to @/warddokteur and @/many-a-hues. They’ve helped me with so many of my guys, haha.
- Visually, I like to pick one object/animal/role and just really lean into it. Garrett’s a tape recorder, Pinstripe’s a shark, etc etc.
- I also tend to group my characters in duos/give them one character they feel strongly about. It makes them easier to visualize and a lot more fun (and that way they all feel interconnected over time!)
I’m still struggling with picking color schemes for them, so I don’t really have tips there unfortunately! Hopefully something here was helpful though!
Hihi!! I saw your ask! Im glad that my tags are welcome, i feel a bit stupid being sentimental about your art- i just remember following you on instagram 4 or 5 years ago, desperately looking for any fellow object head artist, so to see your art on tumblr again jus makes me very happy, i love seeing your ocs and story!
Your nsr art too!!! Esp with the nsr 2 trailer coming out recently ive been thinking about it more ><
DAW, I remember seeing you there too! Your tags are more than welcome, again I’m so incredibly flattered I just don’t have a way to reply to them aside from grinning widely to myself and occasionally sending an ask of appreciation HAHAA.
Oh! Speaking of nostalgia, I recognized Synth, Lumiere, and your plank fellow, immediately! They’re such iconic designs! Very excited to see that they’re still around and on Artfight. Would love to hear more about them :]
…might’ve just drawn something for one of them while writing this out as well.
Anyhow, here’s to more NSR and object heads in the future!!
I'm following your objecthead robot designs. I'm curious about when you said that they used to be humans. I'm curious how does that work in your story? Why did they become robots? Or that's considered spoilers for now?
Ooo! Thank you for the questions! This ended up being pretty wordy so feel free to just skim it!
TLDR: The in-universe reasoning for why the robots became robots are because they were close to and often interacted with machines.
Super long answer below the cut.
How did they become robots: One implicit mechanic of the mutation is that the closer your proximity to the capital city, the stronger the mutation effect alongside a bigger tradeoff of cost and benefit from mutating.
The robots are a special case where most of the mutation ‘energy’ was spent just trying to successfully mutate them into completely inorganic forms, which is both the cost and benefit. It mostly negated itself.
As for why robots, they live in the Technology Sector, where a lot of the factories and machines were being used and developed. Specifically, all of them lived and worked in a company town, so the mutation jumbled them up with the mechanical doodads nearby.
How mutations affect the story in general: Kind of hard to summarize since it’s a large part of the worldbuilding, but here’s some examples!
- Overarching mystery (albeit not the main focus) because I think it’d be fun to naturally pick up information and speculation about it through different characters as you progress
- More logistical problems to even out the rule of cool vibe. Ex. There are literal objecthead characters with otherwise fleshy bodies. Without a head/mouth, they have energy intake issues, so a lot of them are dependent on IVs, which are limited and costly.
Most of the group is malnourished, dependent on the government/holding a job for support, and thus often desperate despite most of them having relatively fantastical skills. It also makes them one of the smaller groups headcount wise since it’s easy to get taken advantage of or literally burn yourself out and die.
- Similar to the above, a bunch of unique and understudied physical forms means getting your health treated and understanding your own body reactions sucks horribly.
There’s a (somewhat mad) scientist duo I have who are actively working on this issue! They’re super fun since they bicker a lot, but I need to get around to redesigning one of them. Gah!
- Body dysphoria’s pretty widespread, although perspectives on wanting to return to the past/human forms depend on the character.
I mentioned this a little in Garrett’s old description (where he hates looking at his body so he tends to cover up), but a more literal example would be @warddokteur’s OC who is a monomaniac about becoming physically more human. Bones and flesh and limbs and such. He will attack you on sight to try to do so.
- Physical appearance can be used for leverage, as you can imagine. Lying and drumming up certain sentiments/stereotypes for some groups, intimidating others, the usual shebang.
- Et cetera et cetera! Lots of characters lots of problems :]
♪ ~∠( ᐛ 」∠)_ Tag game that I'm answering for fun! Going to pass on tagging other people today, though!
Anyhow, I was tagged in by a chill robot-enjoying mutual @alkalinewild! I'm still flattered aw. Check them out!
Last book read: I started Sunrise On The Reaping in early fall, but I got distracted with fanfiction a handful of chapters in. Hopefully I'll pick it back up sometime, if only for nostalgia's sake!
Last TV Series: Finished season one of The Mighty Nein after coming across fanart! I'm not super invested yet, but there's some solid setup, and what I've heard of the original D&D campaign/players has me optimistic! My favorites are Jester and Caleb so far.
Last Film: Rewatched The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness (it's a Studio Ghibli Documentary) a while ago as research for an essay HAHA. Ended up discarding that draft, but I still like the film! The studio's work has this grounded feeling that's emulated in the film as well. Plus, hearing about worker conditions in the art industry is always interesting. It helps that while I'm a hobby artist, some of my friends want to pursue it for a living, so it's good to keep up with :]
Last Song: VS DJSS With Lyric- nah, that's been on loop all week but actually I'm in a VC with a friend (it's Ward), and he introduced Astronaut Song by jomm to me! It's super cosy, and I'm a big fan of the mild space theme!
Last Game: Hades II, I reached the true ending and then took a break. Haven't finished the run needed to start the end-game content yet! I was playing it casually and had a lot of fun. Not much to say here, haha.
Coffee or Tea: I'm open to both, but mostly drink them if I'm going outdoors or studying with friends! I only drink coffee because I find it tasty, so I prefer it with extra milk and sugar and whatnot. Unfortunately, it tends to make me jittery when I'm stressed or far too enthusiastic when my tolerance lowers. Although...the latter can be crazy inspiring for art, sometimes. For teas, I like everything! Green tea, milk tea, flower tea, all the teas. All teas are good as long as they aren't bitter!
I don’t have new art at the moment. Take my old two apples tall Channelle doodle.
