Alice Babs - Lilla stjärna

Alice Babs (January 26, 1924 - 2014) was a talented Swedish jazz, pop and classical vocalist. As a young woman she acted in many Swedish films, but it’s as a vocalist that she has left a lasting legacy, for instance in the swing trio Swe-Danes with Svend Asmussen (violin) and Ulrik Neumann (guitar).

She moved apparently effortlessly between pop, jazz and classical oratories - sometime gracing cross-over works such as Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concerts 2 and 3 with her voice.

Ellington and Babs recorded this album together in Paris in 1963 - and altogether Babs appeared on more than 800 recordings throughout her career…

Alice Babs is inducted in the Melodifestivalen Hall of Fame for her legendary performance in 1958, as the first to represent Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest

Since the entry ’Lilla stjärna’ was never recorded in an album version, the performance from Eurovision is the only documented version

Some believe that there was no Swedish competition in 1958, but that year's Melodifestivalen did take place. The problem is that it just didn't air. The Composers' Association sent out a request to their members who submitted 152 songs

”Lilla stjärna” or ”Samma stjärnor lysa för oss två” as the song was called from the beginning, was chosen internally, which is still the only time that Sweden has chosen its ESC contribution internally

Alice Babs was the chosen artist, but she was not satisfied with the song's lyrics. Therefore, Gunnar Wersén was commissioned to write a new text. The tune was later renamed "Lilla stjärna"

Because the song changed text and title, the original author, Åke Gerhard, banned it from being released on recordings. Only 36 years later, the song was made available on CD, and then in the live version of Eurovision Song Contest 1958 - because it was the only recording that had been made

In the Eurovision Song Contest 1958 in Hilversum, Netherlands, Alice Babs performed in Leksand's suits and finished in fourth place out of a total of ten competition entries
