This book pairs with my Month of Fear Blindness book, though while that test assessed your ability to survive a horror movie, this test assesses how likely you are to end up coupled by the end of a romance movie. Subjects must identify their love story timeline in order to end up with a perfect soul mate.

Month of Love challenge: Innocent

Medieval women walked a conflicted line in the Middle Ages regarding their sexuality. On one side they were meant to be pure and innocent, rejecting promiscuity and keeping themselves pure for marriage. One the other hand in the eyes of the church, and therefore society, women were the source of the original sin and were expected to lead men into temptation. 

There was an extensive amount of imagery and social cues that implied the status of women. Free flowing hair was reserved for unmarried virgins and the value of clothes translated directly to the value of a woman's dowry. Some viewed the story of St.George and the Dragon as a victory of a chivalrous man over the temptation of wanton female sexuality.

The music of my childhood was folk, in particular Irish folk songs. One of my favorite was Karan Casey's rendition of Creggan White Hare, which tells the story of an elusive white hare that dodges hunters and greyhounds with agility and speed. While not a love song, it's an upbeat tune with a great deal of respect for the wily hare. I always loved the hare, who despite being outnumbered and outmatched, always remains uncatchable - and I imagined, as it was a lady hare - makes it home to her brood.

Giallo (Yellow) Handmade books with printed text and acrylic paintings Each book measures 3.75 x 2.5 in

Giallo is the name for the Italian the horror and thriller genre in literature and film. Gaining popularity in the 1930s, the books were called giallo, or yellow in Italian, after their distinct bright yellow covers, which often featured pulpy, pinup illustrations. I created my own titles from the hyperbolic, overly aggressive sentiments of love we commonly use - turning them into small threatening valentines.

Handmade book with watercolor illustrations, 2 x 4 in

I took my inspiration from various mythologies about shape shifting creatures including the Celtic selkie, Japanese kitsune, Hindu naga, and Greek story of Actaeon. I doubled down on the metamorphosis by it possible to flip the characters so you place difference bodies on different heads on different legs.

I put a few images of the individual creatures on my Tumblr along with a time-lapse of the book in motion.
