Why do people have a hard time expressing themselves?
Words are used for communication. They are used to connect the world. Languages create diversity culturally and globally.
In our English textbook, there is this thing called a persona. A persona is a mask. A mask that is used in novels or books to present to the audience. But as humans, we put on a mask. For what reason?
When we read books or essays in English, we usually analyze the different words and word choice by the reader. On page 50 in our English book, a passage is shown to be annotated with notes that relate different parts, foreshadow something, point out tone, and others. We are able to understand the reader more by looking at the words. Readers are able to tell if the author is hiding something or attempting to express themselves. We look at tone and mood to see how the author is expressing themselves and see if we can pinpoint what they’re trying to say.
Edgar Allan Poe is an author that expresses himself in his dark and cruel poems and writings. The mystery of his true self can be roughly assumed by his writings. His haunting writings can be a reflection of himself. His stories may be how he expresses himself. The way he writes and the words he uses can connect to his own personality and experiences. Yet, if he just points out his character directly, people may disagree with his thoughts. They may not accept him without understanding his mindset and psychology.
The Catcher in the Rye portrays the theme of lies and trickery. Holden talks about the hypocrisy and lies that exist in the world he lives in, in the people he knows. The word “phony” appears numerous times in the book. He questions the genuine intentions of people. In Chapter 4, Holden introduces Stradlater who puts up a front. Stradlater may express himself with a clean and good appearance but Holden claims he’s a “secret slob”. Stradlater presents himself in a different way to people, he may or may not be presenting himself truthfully.
Expression has been a hard subject I’ve experienced myself and seen in the people around us. I believe that people are limited and criticized by society which prevent people from fully expressing themselves. I’ve feared what people might think of me. The way I am is not something society accepts easily. We are all searching for acceptance when we express ourselves. Being different is hard so people find it difficult to show their true selves. I’ve seen people who have suffered tragedy and disappointment after expressing themselves. People are criticized for being certain ways and society puts up a face of what people should be. Yet, we also set these standards. At the same time, some people don’t know who they are which prevents them from expressing themselves. As a high school student, I don’t fully know myself so my expression is not complete.
For myself at this specific time in my life, I express myself through my actions, my words, and my art. The way I speak to people, the things I talk about, the words I use, the art I create all pull into myself.
I believe that we all have the freedom to express. We all have the ability to conquer fear of judgement and to express ourselves selflessly, completely, and beautifully.
