Highway Blossoms
So finished playing AlienWorks’s Highway Blossoms last night. As yuri kinetic-novels go it’s a pleasant, charming little story---quirky characters on a road-trip and treasure-hunt across the Southwestern United States. But to me what was most refreshing was having a yuri couple whose depression and identity issues have nothing to do with loving other women. (Spoiler-free (I think...))
Amber, the protag, suffers major depression and experiences a couple of reckless or self-sabotaging episodes during the journey. But her depression stems entirely from family issues. An only child whose parents didn’t want her, she was raised by her grandfather, who she later took care of when his health declined until he passed away. And while Amber suffers rejection complex from her shitty parents and survivor’s guilt from losing her Grandpa, she’s fully cognizant of being gay and accepts this about herself without question.
Similarly, Marina, the love-interest, suffers identity issues from being an unremarkable middle child in a family of nine kids, but never from being bisexual. The treasure hunt is her first time leaving home, and she’s kind if a naïve little bird who’s still stretching her wings and learning about who she is as a person. But I love that Marina never questions her bisexuality. She’s dated boys in the past, but now she’s into Amber and never really seems to find that odd or unusual about herself.
While there will always be value in stories of LGBT+ characters learning to accept themselves and overcome societal stigmas and self-doubt, I also believe there’s value in stories where characters are allowed to accept that part of themselves without question.

Highway Blossoms Review
I recently finished reading Highway Blossoms, a short and cute visual novel about two women falling in love on an impromptu trip across the American Southwest. Overall, it was an enjoyable relaxing read, although I had some issues with it I’d like to discuss in this post. I’ll try to keep my review free of any detailed spoilers, but I will be mentioning some aspects of plot and characterization that give a little bit away.
Sunshine, alpine, family, friends, and good-times, Remind me why I’m doin’ what I’m doin’, amen.
Amber and Marina from the visual novel Highway Blossoms! I’d like to think this lovely couple would enjoy a trip to Yosemite~
I got this VN with a recent Humble Bundle and really liked it! Highly recommend. (And as someone who loves America’s national parks, it was really great to see so many of them portrayed in game!)
I know you're familiar with what they say about Karma, because it's the same thing they say about you.
