Netflix’s new show GLOW dropped a few days ago. I’ve only seen the first episode but I wanted to talk about it.
Somewhere in the 80s when wrestling was just beginning to take off as a huge phenomena, but before the WWF became the WWE and made the “sport” a bonafide hit there came a little cable show called GLOW - Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. It was girls in skimpy spandex costumes pulling each others hair. I have very vague memories of it. I liked wrestling but wasn’t interested in seeing girls do it.
It stuck with me though as I regularly reference the show in an ironic, absurdists sort of way. Now the folks who made Weeds, Nurse Jackie and Orange is the New Black are out to tell its story in their uniquely funny, but dramatic way.
First episode in and I mostly like it. I love that they get the look and feel of the 80s just right. I’m enjoying Marc Maron as the gritty, down on his luck producer of the show. I’m not quite sold on Alison Brie just yet, but I’m rooting for her.
The show’s not quite figured out its tone just yet. Most of it is set inside the dirty, dilapidated old gym where the girls train or in Brie’s crappy apartment. Those scenes have kind of a scuzzy, realistic feel to it. But then they throw in these very 80s neon-light, florescent color fantasy type scenes which gives it a completely different feel. I like both concepts but the show doesn’t transition them well. Ditty the comedy and drama. They need to learn how to mix those things.
Maybe they do, as I said I’m but one episode in. I’m looking forward to more.
