I have a skin condition called eczema, and for the first half of my life, I was teased, ostracized, and otherwise mistreated for it because many people didn't know what it was, and the way it use to manifest (and still does if I eat things I shouldn't, even in trace amounts, or get really hot...) made people think I was either burned or that I was contagious. It hurt. A lot. Pushed me to dangerous thoughts. I hid in my clothes, wore long sleeves and pants in summer so no one would notice my skin. I wanted to disappear. I felt like people never really took the time to get to know me because they already made up their mind about me because of how I look(ed). I still battle with it today when I have flare-ups, because as an artist I interact with people often, and I still subconsciously worry about being taken less seriously or written off entirely because of it. I am unashamed now, growing to accept myself and vowing to truly work on myself is making it easier not to have a need to be concerned with how shallow people have the misfortune of being. I understand now more than ever that I am an amazing being, birthed here to create beautiful, love big, and stride through this life as a living Goddess. I am so thankful for you, Chandra. Thank you for loving me, and for celebrating beauty in all its forms. I am Uzuri.
