NEW DELHI: The Congress on Wednesday came down heavily on the government a day after the price of LPG was hiked by Rs 25 per cylinder. The price of LPG has increased by Rs 265 in the last nine months, which is a whopping 44 per cent increase, it said. Talking to mediapersons at the AICC headquarters, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said, "The prices of the LPG cylinders have been hiked once again by Rs 25. With the current hike in the prices, the LPG cylinder price in Delhi has gone to Rs 859." She said that since November 2020, the government has increased prices of the LPG cylinders by Rs 265, which is a 44 per cent hike. She also said that since May 2020, the government has not given any subsidy on the cooking gas. Shrinate said, "In 2014, the subsidy on fuel was Rs 1.47 lakh crore, which has been decreased to Rs 12,000 crore in 2021 Budget." Accompanied by party spokespersons Alka Lamba and Radhika Khera, Shrinate said that the government earned Rs 4.53 lakh crore through taxes on fuel but no relief was passed to the people of the country. This is the second consecutive month that oil companies have hiked domestic cooking gas prices. A domestic cylinder cost Rs 809 on June 1. This was hiked to Rs 834 on July 1. Slamming Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress leader said, "In June 2013, Modiji said that the people of the country are suffering due to the inflation by the government sitting in Delhi." Shrinate said, "There can be no other falsehood than this, when the people of the country are reeling under inflation, but the government is not worried to give any relief to them by reducing the prices of the LPG." The Congress leader said that it is a cruel joke on the people of the country due to economic slowdown, unemployment and less earning. She said that if the prices of Saudi Arab's Aramco is compared, then current prices of the crude gas is $611.14 per metric tonne. And as per the current rate of the crude gas, the LPG cylinders should be sold at Rs 600.7 per cylinder in India. Slamming the government's Ujjwala scheme, she said, "Government keeps on praising its Ujjwala scheme, but they forget to mention that 23 crore people have been pushed below the poverty level. And how many of them can afford the LPG cylinder which is being sold at Rs 859, she asked. Shrinate demanded the government to show some sensitivity and reduce the prices of the LPG cylinders immediately so that common people get some relief. Earlier, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Twitter criticised the Modi government over hiking the price of LPG. She said by showing the dream of Ujjwala scheme, the Union government collection fund is flourishing by increasing the price of LPG every month. Priyanka tweeted, "On July 1 this year, the Union government increased the price of LPG cylinders by Rs 25 and on August 17 it has again hiked the price of LPG cylinders by Rs 25. By showing the dream of Ujjwala Yojana, the collection scheme of the BJP government is flourishing by increasing the price of LPG every month." Meanwhile, subsidised LPG now costs Rs 859 per 14.2-kg cylinder in Delhi, according to a price notification of oil companies. Non-subsidised LPG rates were increased on August 1 by the same proportion, and now the subsidised cooking gas prices have been raised. There is hardly any difference in the rate of subsidised and non-subsidised cooking gas. Industry sources said the subsidised LPG price was not raised on August 1 because Parliament was in session and the government could have been attacked by the opposition. The latest increase in subsidised LPG price now has taken the cumulative rate hike since January 1 to Rs 165 per cylinder. The government eliminated subsidies on LPG by raising rates every month. These monthly increases led to the elimination of subsidies by May 2020. The price of domestic cooking gas has more than doubled in the last seven years. The retail selling price of domestic gas was Rs 410.5 per 14.2-kg cylinder on March 1, 2014. In Mumbai, a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder now costs Rs 859.5, while in Kolkata, it is priced at Rs 886. For people of Chennai, an LPG cylinder will now cost Rs 875.50, up from Rs 850.50. Meanwhile, diesel prices were cut by 19 to 21 paise across the country, while petrol prices remained unchanged, according to the price notification. This is the first change in price in over a month. Petrol continues to remain unchanged at Rs 101.84 a litre in Delhi. Diesel rates have, however, been reduced to Rs 89.67 per litre from Rs 89.87. In Mumbai, the fuel now costs Rs 97.24 per litre. An old photo of Congress party member Alka Lamba has gone viral with the claim that she was attacked for abusing PM Modi in one of her videos which went viral on social media recently.
CLAIM
An old photo of Alka Lamba went viral on social media claiming that she was attacked by supporters of Bhim Army (dalit rights organisation). The photo went viral with the following caption- बहनजी पर अभद्र टिप्पणी करने वाली अलका लम्बा को माफी न मांगने पर भीम शेरनीयो ने घर में घुसकर ठोक दिया और उसने अपने पिटाई की भड़ास बीजेपी पर जा निकाली😂😂😂 मैं इस बात पर उनकी कड़ी निंदा करता हूं Translation- Supporters of Bhim arm trashed Alka Lamba after the latter did not ask for forgiveness. And she removed that frustration on BJP. I strongly condemn this.

The claim is false. This is an old photo of Alka Lamba fom 2015 of an attack during her teams Anti-drug drive near Rajghat and is now viral with false claims. Alka Lamba, the then AAP MLA, was attacked during an Anti-drug drive from Yamuna to Bazar in Kashmere Gate area around 5 a.m. The following Newspapers wrote about the incident- India Today , Hindustan Times and DNA.
