Knowledge of Sin
Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. (Romans 3:20 KJV)
We have covered a similar idea a few times in this series. Paul is making the case that the Jews are inexcusable because they have the law. He makes a similar case against the rest of us in Romans 2:14, that the Gentiles do that which we do by nature.
In this chapter, he is primarily focussed on the Jews and much scripture is quoted.
The quoted scripture points to the fact that it is through the law that we have a knowledge of sin.
When we share the Gospel and make no mention of sin or the law, are we truly sharing the Gospel? Can you tell me what grace means without defining any reference to the law?
This is amazing as we hear so many sermons on grace, but not often on God's law. How can God be merciful, when there is no law? Mercy can only be shown to a lawbreaker. Grace can only be shown to a person that knows he deserves worse.
Even more amazing, some pastors do not want to teach on the Old Testament at all. Yet, here we are told clearly that it is by the knowledge of the law shows us our sin.
Either we teach the whole council of God, or we teach none of the council of God. Either we teach Genesis to Revelation, or we are fooling ourselves.
We do ourselves a further disservice by not teaching the law. The law does not only teach us how to live, but it also tells us what to do when we mess up. In the Old Testament there were sin offerings. There were those offerings by an individual. Then there were the daily morning and evening sacrifices. Then there were the Annual feasts. These repeat offerings and sacrifices were a testimony to the fact that they could not take away the sin, but they were also temporary, awaiting the Messiah who would once for all deal with our sin problem. Have you looked to the Messiah in faith to have your sins forgiven?
Two Ways to Live? either we believe the entire Bible, or we believe none of it. The choices are that simple. Do you believe. Have you repented?
Father thank for your word. I pray that we will never devalue your word in any way. But especially by favouring one book or one testament above the other. All scripture is still useful for our correction and training etc. Teach us your word. Help us to remain faithful.
2 TIMOTHY S.O.A.P. ~ CHAPTER 3
Tuesday, 9/10/24
SCRIPTURE:
Every scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for showing mistakes, for correcting, and for training character, so that the person who belongs to God can be equipped to do everything that is good. ~ 2 Timothy 3:16-17
OBSERVATION:
Every scripture...
...teaches me something - if I'll just pay attention...
...shows my mistakes - many I'm already aware of...
...gives me correction - if I'll just follow it, right?
...trains my character - if I'll just follow the regimen..
So I can be:
Equipped to do everything that is good...
Equipped to do everything that is good...
Equipped to do everything that is good...
APPLICATION:
Be teachable...
Learn from - quit repeating - my mistakes...
Accept correction...
Follow His training...
Be equipped...
PRAYER:
Loving Father God - I confess failing to learn from my mistakes and accepting correction in so many "little" things in my life, putting my wants and will before Your everything good You have for me in Your will - Thank You for Your Holy Spirit's continued patient correcting and teaching and equipping despite my selfishness, and may I see Your hand and direction in all that I do so that You might get the glory - In Jesus's Name and for Your praise and worship...
For Him... for y'all... for yours...
