This is a magazine in which you can find both patterns and how-tos and historical explorations of needlework of all kinds. So you see here one of those amazing lace stole patterns, this one called Flower Garden Shawl by Alla Postelnik, inspired by the traditional work of Estonia. Having been recently trying and flubbing a lace pattern, I am in aware of the skill and attention involved in their making. Then you see Inna Voltchkova’s Leicester Hat and Mitts, a knitted pattern inspired by the sheep after which they are named. The pretty floral needlework is an example of Sorbello stitch by Deanna Hall West who explains it in a technical article with accompanying pattern.
The funny green and pink child’s costume is from an article by Beverly Gordon on the history of crepe paper dresses (much tougher stuff than the crepe paper we use for streamers) which were popular in the 1920s. In addition, there are articles on the history of Martha Washington and her sewing projects, the Great Lakes Native Americans’ bandolier bags which were beaded, lace in Belgium after the First World War, and more.
