Death of a Gunfighter (1969) was the first film to carry the bogus Allen Smithee director credit. Halfway through filming, Star Richard Widmark had the studio replace original director Robert Totten with Don Siegel. By the end of the production, neither director wanted the credit. A panel from the DGA came up with the peculiar pseudonym.

Alan Smithee (y sus variantes Allen Smithee y Alan Smythee) es un seudónimo asumido por los directores de cine estadounidenses cuando por cualquier motivo repudian el resultado de una producción cinematográfica y no quieren aparecer en los créditos de la película.1 Alan Smithee es el anagrama de "The Alias Men" ("Los hombres con un alias"). Este seudónimo fue acuñado por el Sindicato de directores de Estados Unidos en 1968 y se usó oficialmente hasta 2000,1 para manifestar la insatisfacción del director por no haber tenido el control creativo deseado sobre la película. Según las reglas de su uso el director se comprometía a no comentar las causas concretas que le llevaban a tomar tal decisión o incluso a no reconocer que era el director real.2 Este seudónimo también ha sido utilizado por otros trabajadores del gremio cinematográfico como los guionistas.

“DEATH OF A GUNFIGHTER is most notable for the first use of the pseudonymous Allen Smithee directorial credit.... The film began under the direction of Robert Totten, an experienced television director (Gunsmoke, The Legend of Jesse James). After clashes with star Widmark, and almost a year of work, he was dropped and replaced by Don Siegel. When the film was finished Siegel did not want his name to replace Totten's. Widmark protested and an agreement was made with the Directors Guild of America for the pseudonym Allen Smithee to be used.

The New York Times commented that the film was "sharply directed by Allen Smithee who has an adroit facility for scanning faces and extracting sharp background detail," Roger Ebert called the film "an extraordinary western ... director Allen Smithee, a name I'm not familiar with, allows his story to unfold naturally.” –Wikipedia

The Danish title translates as “A Handful of Lead.”
