Stream of Consciousness #2: Alliance
Perhaps ignorance was the first alliance. The other day I watched as a rabbit and a magpie had several exchanges, dancing back and forth, vying for the same patch of grass. After a while both parties landed and simply ignored each other, getting what they needed when they realised neither was predator. An agreed-upon ignorance benefits everyone, everyone goes about their business and they don’t even need to share worldviews, they can be diametrically opposed and yet serve one another in the post office. Ignorance is bliss, ignorance is matrimony and normality, it’s pretending the little old lady down the street doesn’t sell pot to your kids, its pretending your husband doesn’t have a foot fetish, its pretending your not depressed or insane or upset or disturbed or unwanted. It’s pretending you know how the world works, an illusion so palpable and believable sometimes that when it shatters you must choose to ignore once more or change or die or embrace inversion to a degree so heinous and reprehensible to the sensitivities of those around that you find yourself ignored by those you once called friends and family. Ignorance is layered thick. Through everything we don’t know that we say we don’t need to, to everything we do know that we presuppose that others must as well. In the presupposition of knowledge judgements are made, and stereotypes are born, forged in misinformation and the ineffective, incapable capacity of human reasoning that we must rely upon so frequently. Niggers run rampant, gooks are stealing your job, abbos are taking the government’s money and taking your liquor and arabs are trying to blow you up while charging a cab surcharge you hateful fuck. Be careful out there mister as you take your tea with milk, this is the watered-down version, the consumable, and you are the consumer. So hungry for the brutal justice you think is coming in your bastardised barbaric vision of karma that allows you to hate the poor and think that all will be right with the world and that your mortgage won’t fuck you in the ass.
