5 Steps To Get Your Project From Script To Screen by Allison Powell via FilmCourage.com.

Hey everybody. My name is Allison Powell and I’m an actor and filmmaker.I am going to walk you through the five steps to get your project from script-to-screen. And I’m mainly going to be talking about shorter projects (short films or web series). There’s a lot of information about how to get independent features made and while it’s essentially the same steps there are a lot more in depth and you have a lot more variables that you’re dealing with but there’s not a ton of information about how to make a short project or a small budget project.

There’s a lot of people that’ll just say go make your movie like get friends together go shoot it on your iPhone which is great and totally doable but sometimes it’s like I don’t know what to do? What are the steps how do I make it happen and that’s certainly where I was coming from when I started making shorter projects. So I am going to explain to you everything that you need to know.

First step when you’re making a short project is to determine what your budget is. I always tell people your budget is the money that you have whether that’s the money that you have in your savings account. The money that you can put aside from your check every week or the money that you crowdfund and raise with the help of friends. It’s always gonna be the money that you have. Anything is possible on any budget. Some things are just easier with more money or easier to achieve with less money. Your budget is determined by what you want to do with the project at the end so think about that if you just want to make a project to learn how to get a project together. What it means to be on set, test out producing something, test out if you like directing, see if you want to get some better footage for your reel or dramatic footage for your reel. I highly recommend spending less money. You are going to learn the same lessons if you spend two hundred and fifty dollars or if you spend twenty five hundred dollars and it’s way better to learn the lessons on the two hundred and fifty dollar project than on the twenty-five hundred dollar project.Think about what you want to do with your end goal. If you want to submit it to festivals. If you want it to be sort of a proof of concept for a feature or pitching a pilot then you probably want to spend a little bit more money. You’re just going to get a slightly higher quality project. You’re going to be able to rent better equipment and locations and make it look really, really nice. If you just want to make a project to learn how to do it you can spend 60 bucks. I made five projects for $60 to a hundred and fifty dollars and I learned almost everything I needed to know about producing doing those projects so it’s totally possible. When you’re thinking about your project think about the end goal and that’s going to determine what your budget is and again your budget is the money that you have. Anything’s possible for any amount. It just might take more work. Your budget (when you’re putting it together) I put all my budgets together in Google Sheets just as a spreadsheet so basically an Excel document. That way you can also put in all of the formulas. So I can say it’s going be a two-day shoot, I’m paying my director two hundred dollars a day, so two hundred/two days and then I can put in a formula here to multiply those days or add the columns.

Most Difficult Lesson For First Time Filmmakers by Allison Powell via FilmCourage.com.

Hi, I’m Allison Powell and I’m an actor/filmmaker. Today I am going to be talking to you about one of the hardest lessons that I had to learn when I was starting out as a filmmaker/producer and that is something that I am still working on in daily life. It is the ability to admit that you don’t know how to do something and being vulnerable enough and confident enough to ask for help.

I always tell people now my three favorite words on a film set are “I…Don’t…Know.” Those three words can be incredibly hard to say especially when you are just starting out and you want people to think that you’ve got this, you’re smart, you’re confident, you know what you’re doing, they can trust you, they definitely should have hired you, you’re dependable. But in reality not everyone on a set can know everything. You can’t know how to do everything…that would just be insane.

I started out pretending that I knew what something meant or what a piece of equipment was or I’d go away for 10 minutes and maybe try to do whatever they asked me to do or what I thought they’d ask me to do and then I would come back and just say “Yeah…it’s not working.” Or “I couldn’t find it.” Or “I can’t figure it out.” And for some reason I thought it was better to kind of…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).

writeblr intro

It’s been a while since I wrote my first writeblr intro, and here I am, writing a new one, just because I want to share my new wip and because I have already set this blog a bit!

So, my name is Melania, and I go by Lana mostly (you can call me Melania, Melanie, Mel or Mia if you like, the last two are my old nicknames). I am eighteen (turning 19 in two weeks) Ukrainian student who majors in Persian and Ukrainian philology. 

I started with poetry in elementary school, and my first prose project I remember was Harry Potter Dramione fanfiction. My first original writing attempt was a mystery detective, but I never got further than four chapters... 

I’m 99% pantser, so maybe that’s the reason. 

I mostly write in Russian, and ‘The Second Chance’ is my first English novel. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll just share a brief blurb and protagonists info!

Blurb: Allison has always been a loved child, a good student, a kind person. Everything changed when she lost not only her fiancé, but also her entire family. Suffering from depression and left alone without any minimum support, she is forced to leave the only close person she has – her six-months-old child. The feeling of guilt eats her mind and soul, and she gives up on her life. After committing suicide, Allison ends up in Moarn, the capital city of The Second Chance World. At first, it seems like a true second chance: Allison finds love, friends, and feels needed for the first time in a year. Yet, old demons still haunt her. When she realizes she can’t escape them, she decides to find a way to fix her pastlife mistakes. Is there any way to do that if you are already dead?

Major protagonist: Allison, 22-year-old American. She grew up nurtured, was the only child in her family. She was dating a guy she planned to have family with, but when he found she was pregnant, he left her, scared of responsibilities. Allison gave birth anyways, hopping her parents will help her, but they died on the way to her daughter’s birthday celebration. She was left completely alone and broken, too broken to even think of possible ways to handle this situation alone, and after weeks of unsuccessful attempts, she leaves her baby, Grace, near the ex-friend neighbor's house, hoping to make some money, get a good living and find her. Haunted by thoughts and hating her own self, she impulsively kills herself.

Minor protagonist: Sebastian, 26 years old, British. Works as a barman and shares an apartment with Allison. He grew up neglected, in a rich family. His parents divorced, and he stayed with his mother who became a drug addict after her husband left her for another woman who didn’t want to have Sebastian around. He had a girlfriend since high school, and they decided to move in and get married after she got pregnant during their fifth year of relationship. She drowned on her bachelorette party, and Sebastian couldn’t handle the loss of his only true family he dreamed of his entire life. By the time Allison comes to TSCW, he already has his seventh year there.

I’ve been doing some research, and it turns out that sex is actually a biological need - like, the Hierarchy of Needs has it at the very bottom. So if I want to become creative or moral or problem-solving, then I have to do it, right?

3. Style of hair?

Allison has long wavy black hair, but she cuts it later (I guess).

16. Boots, sneakers, or bare foot?

Sneakers, for sure! She loves unisex clothes and shoes, and if she ever has to wear boots, she would choose something gender-neutral looking and low-heeled or flat.

19. What is their color palette (ei - eyes, skin, hair)?

Allison's grandfather was African American, so Allison has dark, olive skin, black hair and brown eyes.

24. Talk about their smile!

After losing everything and everyone she loved, Allison isn't the one you would see smiling, but when she does, her smile is either sarcastic or the most sincere ever, yet probably sad. She doesn't believe in good things anymore, and it is hard for her to realize that everything can be good, even if it stopped being so a while ago. She rarely shows her teeth while smiling, but when she does, you can be sure that she is genuinely happy.
