how do you get your inspiration when creating monsters design? I have been trying to create some monster design but i'm struggling
Ok I’m gunna break my own rule of not answering anons. But this is such a good question I can’t pass it up!
I’ve always loved monsters since I could start drawing. I was seen as the weird one of the family for drawing dragons and creatures instead of playing with Barbie’s and Ken’s. I even used to play with transformers: beast wars toys because they were animals/looked cool to me. Dinosaurs were also a HUGE part in being fascinated with the bizarre and monstrous. And over time I started to draw my own fantastical designs based on them.
Then back in my deviant art days and when I just stared to be artistically present on the web, I found an artist that I just absolutely admired and grew major inspiration from. Her name is Allison Theus. And if you’ve never seen her art I HIGHLY recommend you do. She has made several art books of her creatures and last I saw ,she works as a creature designer now! (One book I have signed and I’m still over the moon I got a compliment from her in it ahhhhhh!)
She’s really good with anatomy of animals (she studied zoology if I remember) so she’s perfect to learn structure and to study from. Aside from that my advice to you would be to draw and practice with different animal images. Trace over photos with shapes to get a basic gist of their structure. I’m not perfect - I’m still learning but it helps a lot.

Also! There is ‘how to think when you draw’ books available on kickstarter only, that are absolutely a MUST for any artist. They focus on a multitude of things, but animals are in there on how to structure them. Link is here.
