Art to See in Los Angeles
A few exhibitions on view now in Los Angeles that are not to be missed...
“L.A. Louver is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by Los Angeles-based artist Alison Saar. Taking inspiration from the character of Topsy in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s classic Civil War-era novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Saar re-contextualizes the sprightly uncouth slave girl as a symbol of defiance, through paintings on dyed vintage linens and sculptures carved from wood.
“She was one of the blackest of her race,” writes Stowe of Topsy in Uncle Tom’s Cabin. “Her woolly hair was braided in sundry little tails which stuck out in every direction... there was something odd and goblin-like about her appearance.” In over a dozen works, Saar utilizes this literal characterization to figuratively transform the chastised and ill-mannered Topsy into a fearless girl-at-arms. “
Exhibition is on view until May 12th.
Dianne Williams at LA Art Association / Gallery 825
“Diane Williams' INcongruence involves a participatory art piece and an installation that will confront viewers, turning them into active participants. The installation involves 8 large modules made out of wire, recycled and manipulated fiber such as: yarn, thread, fabric, and shredded paintings, interwoven together and creating an immersive structure that fills Gallery 825's largest front space. These materials have personal history, discarded or purchased from the artist's neighborhood Thrift Shop in Glassell Park and the Fabric District in Downtown Los Angeles called Santee Alley, frequented by many lower and middle income immigrant families. Williams intertwined these elements into modular weavings, reminiscent of protest signs and roadside memorials that will operate as obstructions, confinement and disruptions.“
Exhibition is on view until April 20th.
