There Is No Free Data
Nothing is free. Not butterflies. Not lunch. And not the information and data I spend half my day searching out and 'consuming'.
In fact, data cannot be free because data is the new dollar. Data is actually the in-kind currency we trade in a monstrous marketplace of a million barter-only transactions every minute.
So, when I see an offer of something for free, some bit of usually only temporarily useful data, only to discover that I am required to sign in or sign up in order to take possession of this free something, I cry bullshit.
If I have to provide a name, email address or any other data in order to get that something, then that something is not, in fact free. The price of that something is my data.
Data: the lingua france of the digital economy.
Free data makes about as much sense as free money.
