I. To tell you that arguing about superheroes got them heated, would be an understatement. Valentina and Ryan bickered in the middle of the studio, the old age debate between Superman and Batman pretty much distracting them from the notes on the page. Their voices got increasingly louder until they both paused to stare at each other, eyes gleaming with what first appeared to be fire, but really it was clear and hilarious amusement. Valentina was the first one to break, leaning forward to giggle with her head shaking; Ryan coming in second, never taking his eyes off of her. The way he looked at her made her press a pretty uncoordinated kiss to his forehead, eyes fond. “Let’s agree to disagree, huh, Ry?” And well, he couldn’t deny her that when he still felt her lips, warming him up.
II. Valentina was hanging upside down from her perch on his sofa, her hair pretty much a work of gravity as she sang the lyrics to Britney Spears’ Baby One More Time. Legs kicking the air as she wiggled in a little dance, fingertips tapping her side to the beat. They were brainstorming ideas and she started to sing one of her favorite songs for inspiration, her position reminiscent of how she used to hang about when she was younger. Which to be fair, was just a week ago in Val’s mind, but a lifetime in Ryan’s. He was leaning against the sofa, sitting on the ground pretty much right next to her, enjoying the blast from the past. But it was like high school all over again and the nostalgic pang in his chest prompted him to turn his head slightly and place a butterfly imprint of a kiss onto her shoulder, the song in her lips stuttering a bit as she turned to look at him with the softest of smiles.
III. This kiss was prompted by rain. She gasped in horror as her hair began to get wet and Ryan laughed, amused by her antics. Pretty usual for them, except Valentina grinned at his laughter and pointed at him in a playful threat. “You better run,” she said, as she got ready to pounce on him, the water droplets thicker and heavier with each passing minute. Ryan knew the easiest way to get her to attack and he said it, teasingly looking down at her with a mention of how short she was: and the chase began. She giggled brightly, both of them were fully drenched now and when he allowed her to catch up to him, they both managed to fit together like puzzle pieces, his rough hand on her cheek, pulling her lips to his. It was fireworks, Val would later think back, but now? She stayed in her tippytoes, lips ghosting over his. The rain was but a faint thought.
IV. She was tugging on his hand with excitement, the carnival games calling out to her. Their fingers were intertwined and the air taking on a magical feel. Nothing’s changed, Valentina was the same. It was like watching a video of their childhood or living in a world where a time machine was real. Ryan was taken, she was too, but none of that mattered when Valentina reeled you in and made you forget about everything. Around her, nothing existed, but the dream had to end. Time passed and he grew up, he MOVED on. He kissed her hand slowly, pulling her to a stop, before sliding his hand away. “I should go,” he says and she is left standing alone.
V. His lyrics were a perfect match her to music. All of their hard work has paid off. Valentina should be happy, proud, excited. She should be a lot of things. She should actually be at home, listening to MTV, being a thirteen year old. If not that that, she should be with Ryan, her best friend who she has fallen head over heels in love with. The tingling she gets when they hold hands or hug, the butterflies in her gut when he looks at her.. She runs to him, impulsive and emotional, rushes to his apartment and kisses him with all the passion in her chest, arms wrapping around his neck. It’s amazing. It ends. Ryan looks apologetic, confused, hurt. His fiancee calls to him from the living room and Val instantly feels her face fall. She makes excuses, she can’t remember what she said but she had to leave.
