m y sister told me that hank green said that since ice is a rock then water should be lava.. thoughts on this?
okay so it really all depends on the definitions you use because technically ice is a mineral since a mineral needs to be a naturally occurring inorganic solid with crystal structure and characteristic chemical composition, which if you’re looking at natural ice, it fulfills all of those (so, ice you make in your freezer is immediately ruled out of being considered any of these things) and, since a rock is usually defined as basically one or more minerals combined together, ice is then also technically a rock. now, the definition of lava is that it’s molten rock that has been extruded onto the earth’s surface. if you pick that apart, molten means “liquefied by heat, especially of things with a high melting point.” so, technically water could be considered lava if you think about the fact that yeah, it has been liquefied by heat and certainly has a higher melting point than other things and an example of water being extruded onto the earth’s surface would be geysers. but also, you could say that by that definition water is not lava because it’s not like there’s ice underground that then gets liquefied and then extruded onto the surface. plus the high melting point of rocks is way higher than that of ice. so basically this is one of those things that’s both really good for people who like making unlikely points on the internet and then backing them up and people who like debunking those points because as far as i can tell, depending on how you look at it they’re both true
