There is an important distinction between the right to freedom from government censorship within a liberal democracy and fascist organizing. Fascism is a revolutionary political program that seeks to overthrow an existing government and install an authoritarian regime grounded in conservative right wing ideologies – including white supremacy, xenophobia, sexism, homophobia, colonialism, and anti-Semitism, to name a few. Fascists agitate for hatred of and violence against marginalized people – often in the form of street violence, harassment, stalking, and death threats. Early 20th century fascists exploited ideas of open democracy and ‘free speech’ to propagandize and build an anti-democratic force, which they then leveraged to transform a parliamentary democracy into a militarized authoritarian government called the Third Reich. We learned in kindergarten that words are actions and threats are no joke: fascist speech and fascist organizing are acts of political violence. This is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
