Akers first took a photograph of Allyn alone. While picture was being taken there was a raging storm, accompanied by thunder, lightning and rain. Next Akers snapped Olive alone with the surf behind her, the storm was still raging. The Tribune sent the two separate photographs to Edward Heim, technical director of the Camera Club in NYC. Heim first put the negative of Olive in the enlarging camera and sketched the outline of the picture part. Then the other negative was used to position Allyn properly. The latter negative was blocked out, leaving only the figure. Each negative was then exposed on the sensitive paper, dodged and vignetted, and the figures blended with brush and pencil.
