If the thought of sipping Tang for light years was what put you off the astronaut path, you might be interested to know there was once almost an official alcoholic beverage of American astronauts.

After the dehydrated cube menu for the Gemini and Apollo missions was universally panned (one taste-tester reporting he “lost the will to live” after eating it for a mere three days), NASA started serious work on whipping up a more appetizing array of foodstuffs for the country’s first space station, Skylab. It being the wild and crazy seventies, though, that meant there was almost an official happy hour libation for astronauts who needed to take the edge off.

After consulting with several professors at the University of California at Davis, it was decided that a Sherry would work best because any wine flown would have to be repackaged. Sherry is a very stable product, having been heated during the processing. Thus, it would be the least likely to undergo changes if it were to be repackaged.

The winner of the space Sherry taste test was Paul Masson California Rare Cream Sherry. A quantity of this Rare Cream Sherry was ordered for the entire Skylab mission and was delivered to the Johnson Space Center. A package was developed that consisted of a flexible plastic pouch with a built-in drinking tube, which could be cut off. The astronaut would simply squeeze the bag and drink the wine from the package.

Yep, squeezee bags full of booze. As always, America was keepin’ it classy, but we have no doubt it’s done a world of good for international relations that our brave men and women in space have had to stay friendly with the Russians for a swig or two.
