Why are you giving me previews for the episode I'm currently watching WHILE I'M WATCHING IT??? Is the average History Channel viewer that lacking in attention span? For fuck's sake!!!
Still watching Alone and it’s hard to say how I feel about it. The survival skills demonstrated are interesting, I’m glad season 6 seems to have done away with the stupid “reunion special” episode. On the other hand I’m profoundly uncomfortable with the gameshow element where these people are basically sacrificing their health and safety to win money, and as a lot of the participants confess, they need the money. Some of them are long term homeless, a lot of them just want to provide for their families and can apparently see no other way to security except this potential windfall. Plus that whole season where they brought back past participants (including one guy who’d literally gotten into starvation syndrome and had to be medically pulled) and framed it as “redemption”... kinda fucked up? You’re not a failure because you failed to do something that humans are just not built to do (endure the wilderness in complete isolation for weeks on end), and you certainly don’t need redeeming. Such a bizarre microcosm of American culture, late capitalism culture.
