Running Man ~ Kim Jongkook

You immediately took a step to your left as you noticed a figure coming up alongside you, knowing who it was straight away. Everyone had warned you about Jongkook ahead of your appearance, but even you had underestimated how big he was.

“Y/N, right?” A deep voice asked as they picked up a tray to carry their food to a table once they had picked it up. “You’re on today’s episode, aren’t you?” They then asked as you slowly turned around.

You felt tiny as you looked at Jongkooks broad shoulders as he spoke to you, timidly nodding your head in reply to him. A chuckle came from him as he noticed the shy expression on your face, having experienced it time and time again with so many guest stars.

You didn’t know what to say as you started to pile up your tray with plenty of food to give yourself as much energy as possible before the shoot began, keeping a close eye on how much food Jongkook placed on his plate as well.

It was obvious to you straight away how diet conscious he was as he carefully selected what he wanted to eat. You, on the other hand, didn’t care at all, opting to make the most of a catering service just like you always did.

“Are you excited to be here?” He asked as soon as you were finished getting your lunch together.

Your shoulders shrugged in response, “I’m a little nervous,” you admitted, keeping your weak smile.

Jongkook nodded understandingly as you spoke, “why don’t you come and sit with me? We can eat together, and I can tell you everything that you needed to know.

Despite how nervous his stature made you, his kindness quickly swept you away as you found yourself nodding. Jongkook led you across to a spare table at the back of the catering hall, stepping back so that you could pick a seat before sitting himself in the other.

“Is this your first time on Running Man?” He quizzed as soon as you sat down, “everyone gets nervous when it’s their first time.”

“I don’t want to make a fool of myself,” you sighed as you placed your tray down, “you guys are all so good at the games.”

An appreciative smile appeared on Jongkook’s face as you spoke, listening intently as you told him some of the things you worried about. Not once did he even pick up any of his food, making sure to keep his attention on you the entire time.

“Do you know the secret to being good on this show?” Jongkook asked as you finished speaking, only for your shoulders to shrug. “If you get me as a partner then you’re guaranteed to do well, I smash all of these things.”

Your eyebrows raised at how confident Jongkook sounded, “I was told that if I want someone that’s going to help me then Haha is a good shout for a partner to have.”

“No way, who told you that?” Jongkook gasped back across at you, shaking his head.

You simply smiled across to him as you began to tuck into your food, finding yourself oddly comfortable around him. Jongkook had welcomed you straight away, giving you the chance to forget about the things that worried you.

It was a big place, with a lot of people, much grander than anything you had experienced on a variety show before. The stars were huge, but as Jongkook had proven to you, they still made time for their guests too.

“You know, I can have a word with one of the producers if you want me as your partner,” Jongkook told you in between mouthfuls of his banana on the side of his tray.

With your nerves at an all time high, you wanted to be safe on the show, and it seemed like there was only one person who was going to be able to do that for you.

“I can make sure that you don’t come last,” Jongkook assured you as you stayed quiet, “normally most of our guests want to be on my team, not Haha’s.”

“What about one of the girls?” You then asked him, trying your best to wind him up.

“They’re the worst,” Jongkook scoffed jokingly, “trust me, if you want to come last then just pick Somin as your partner.”

Your eyes went wide as he spoke, “I know that you definitely don’t mean that, you adore her.”

Jongkook’s head shook back at you, shyly glancing down to the tray of food in front of him. You knew straight away that you had got him, even if there wasn’t something between them, you know just how much he cared about her deep down.

“I think I’ll try my best to pick you as my partner,” you told Jongkook once you’d finished laughing, “but there’s no guarantee that I’ll get to have you as my partner.”

“Just trust me,” he assured you with a confident grin, “you’ll be surprised how easy it is to get the producers to make their minds up before we start shooting.”

Your head nodded nervously as he tried his best to make you feel more confident, “would you really try and sway the producers for me?”

“I can tell that you’re nervous, I just want to help,” Jongkook kindly told you.

The smile on your face grew as you found yourself paying full attention to him again, “I wasn’t expecting any of you guys to be as nice as this to a guest.”

“You’ve not met the rest of the team yet,” Jongkook reminded you, “just because I’m nice, doesn’t mean that the rest of them are nice, I’ve spent several years with them.”

The dynamic between the group was one of the biggest deciding factors that you had to know that Running Man was the place for you. You couldn’t wait to get stuck in and really feel immersed in how much fun they always seemed to have on the TV screens.

“Try and eat up as much as possible too,” Jongkook warned you as you fell silent, “I’ve seen a glimpse at what they’ve got planned today, and you’ll need your energy.”

“Is it something physical?” You immediately quizzed in reply to him.

When Jongkook’s head nodded in reply to you, you knew that you’d made the right decision trying to get him as your partner, with first place seemingly already yours without even trying.

“Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of you today,” Jongkook promised as he noticed you going slightly distant once again, “and all of the others will too, we have good fun filming.”

Your head nodded as you glanced across to look at Jongkook, “I’m excited, I guess I’m just the newbie, it’s hard trying to find the place to fit in.”

“I’ll help,” he told you once again, convincing you more and more every time that he spoke that you were going to be well looked after with Jongkook right by your side, “I never leave a guest feeling nervous or worried.”

“You’re definitely helping me a lot,” you told him, “I’m already a lot less nervous than I was when I walked through the door this morning.”

“Five minutes shooting and I promise you’ll wonder why you were ever nervous,” he smiled, “you’ll feel on top of the world when we win the episode today.”

“You seem pretty confident that we’ll win together,” you teased in reply to him.

“Look at us, we make the perfect team Y/N.”

plot: Jungkook is a hybrid in the sex club Euphoria. After a police raid, led by you, he takes his chances and searches for help. Will you help him or turn him in like the law says?

“Going in from the back won’t guarantee that the hybrids are safe, I won't risk their lives just because we are after the money” your voice was low and angry. You couldn’t believe that your colleagues were this unreasonable. Taeyongs torch lit up the map of the ground plan. “Come on, you really care about some fucked out animals? This is a big amount of money, if they get away, it’s on you” Yuta spat and you grew even angrier. How little mean helpless hybrids to this asshole?

“Watch your mouth, I’m still your superior. And I’m saying we are going east. I want no hybrid dead, do you understand?” A collective groan chimed and you nodded to yourself. Ever since you were promoted your colleagues started to act like children, mad that they weren’t promoted, but you could have cared less. Your promotion brought bigger cases and better payment.

“Go! We’re going in” you signaled and your team followed suit. The footsteps could be heard as the team rushed towards the east entrance. You pondered if the hybrids inside were aware of the soon to come help. The bar was located east, as the backstage area was at the back.

Hybrids are poor little souls, made by humanity to be humiliated. Owning a hybrid is like owning a modern day slave, they’re not human therefore they’re not to be treated with the same rights. The authorities like to generalize the way people treat hybrids, though it was clear as day that not everyone treated hybrids with the love they deserved.

The team spread quite fast, Haechan and you reached the backstage area. The door was locked but he was quick to pick the lock. As soon as the door opened sounds of whimpering and afraid pleads could be heard. Light illuminated the room as you reached the switch. What you saw made you angry, really angry. A gun was being pointed to a hybrid's head. “One more step and I'll kill them all, starting with this fucker” you gulped as you took a good look at the distraught boy.

He had a black eye and a busted lip, the hair on top of his head was tousled and trenched in blood, probably due to a blow to the head. His cheeks wet with tears, you couldn’t stand it.

“Okay, listen here. Let him go and you can take me as a hostage, alright? He did nothing wrong” the boy fixed his gaze on you, not believing what he was hearing. Why would a human try to help him? Why would this winsome woman try to protect a person like him? He couldn’t think of a way to explain it.

“Hey, are you okay? Calm down and listen to me, everything’s going to be alright” you aimed for the frightened boy. “Stop talking to the rat. I’ll kill him” he spat and your hand started to tremble in fury. “Fine, this is how it’s going to go. You’re going to let him go, unscathed or I’ll put a bullet in your head”

His mind started to do rounds as he thought about your threat. The grip on the hybrid loosened and he was fast to wring his way out of the man's grasp. It seemed as if his skinny legs wouldn’t be able to hold his weight but he charged towards you.

His hands clawed into your jacket as he leaned his head on your back, trying to catch his breath. “It’s alright” you whispered, not sure if he heard you.

Haechan and Jaemin were quick to put him in cuffs and get his sorry ass outside. JK, that was his name, has already calmed down as you took him to a table near the entrance. “Are you alright?” you asked quietly, trying not to frighten him any further. He nodded, not meeting your eyes. “Joy, can you get me a paramedic?” She hurried outside to get one. You wanted him to be taken care of. “But he’s a hybrid,” the woman stated in disbelief. “You’re going to do your job, aren’t you?” You couldn’t understand it.

JK studied you, trying to find your motive. Why are you so kind, so caring even? Humans being kind to hybrids without an ulterior motive was rare and almost petrifying. He couldn’t read you, but he was more than grateful that you were willing to help him, no one would’ve.

The Euphoria club has been running in all its glory again. The raid didn’t affect people's pleasure of abusing hybrids in the slightest, sadly. The thought of arresting every person in that club pleased you, sadly it wasn’t reality.

The last few weeks you’ve been thinking about him, JK. You couldn’t help but feel sad everytime your mind went back to him. The image of his frightened form with a gun pointed to his head came back to you, over and over again. Everytime you close your eyes you see the fear, the pain and the pleas to help him out of this hellhole. You couldn’t do anything though, he wasn’t your hybrid and his owners weren’t breaking any laws.

You sighed as you changed your clothes, life is unfair.

The rain pours down heavily, soaking your clothes almost completely before you reach your apartment door. The dim light at the entrance let you see your shoes and nothing more, this damn lightbulb needed to be changed. Your hair was soaking wet and cold, freezing you to death. Just moments before your hand plugged the hairdryer into the socket you heard a light knock.

You stared at your reflection in the mirror, your eyebrows furrowed. Then again, a faint knock, louder than the first one sounded through the apartment. With fast steps you marched towards the front door. You opened the door just to be met with a person you expected to never see again. “JK?” you whispered as his bloodshot eyes met yours. His face is coated in a mix of yellow and purple, they hit him more. “What are you doing here?” you whispered again, disbelief made itself present. He ran away, that’s what he did.

“I couldn’t do it anymore,” he whispered back. His voice trembled in the cold and you’re quick to open the door more, to let the poor boy inside, inside to warm up. “God, come in, you must be freezing” you took his icy hand and pulled him inside. “You’re so cold, wait here, I’ll get you a towel” his lips were blue and his hair stuck to his forehead.

After giving him something to dry himself off you dragged him to the kitchen. “Sit down and tell me what happened” he followed your command as you started to make some tea.

“I ran away,” he muttered with trembling hands. You figured as much. “I thought about you a lot. The way you treated me made me crave it more. I’ve had enough of being beaten and locked up. I want to be free” he answered with desperation painted in his brown eyes, you sighed. This was bad, he ran away. He could be put down if they found him and his owner didn’t want him anymore. “You are the only one I could think of who is able to help me. Please don’t bring me back” he pleaded. You placed the warm cup in his hands. He winced a bit at the sudden contact, making you put it on the table next to him instead.

Tears coated his cheeks once more. What are you supposed to do? “Alright, how about a warm meal. How does that sound?” his big brown eyes stared at you, unsure how to respond. “What would you like? I could make you some ramen” his ears perk up at the sound of food. He must’ve been starving “I take that as a yes”

So there you two sat, on the couch in silence. You weren’t such a social person unless your job required you to be. He kept his hands on his knees and his eyes trained on the parquet floor. You had your knees clasped in your arms and your chin resting on top of them. You sighed. “I’m not quite sure what to do with you”

His eyes found yours just to fall to the floor again. “I could clean for you if you let me stay,” he tried. You leaned your head to the right as you looked at him. The thought of him cleaning your apartment like a slave made your insides turn. You didn’t like it. He couldn’t even go out and get a job because him running away made this whole situation exacerbating.

“You could start with putting your plate in the dishwasher,” you said. His head snapped up, eyes surprised. You were sure that he expected you to turn him away, telling him to leave. “You can have a blanket and the couch for tonight.” You pet his knee as you stood up. “Let’s talk about everything tomorrow.” you paused “The bathroom is down the hall”

He laid there, tears in his eyes. A small smile made itself evident on his face as he took a deep breath. It was silent in your living room, no one cried, no one threatened someone to sleep or do something they didn't want to do. It was quiet and the blanket smelled like vanilla. A quiet sob left his mouth as he closed his eyes, he was free.

The next morning you washed up and made your way to the living room to check on JK. He was sitting by the window, staring down on the busy streets. “Good morning” you offered. He turned around, eyes puffy and a small smile on his face.

“How did you sleep?” You continued. He stood from the couch and walked over to the dining table. “Coffee?” You offered. He huffed “I slept great, your couch is comfortable and I’d like a coffee, thank you” you nodded and got the coffees ready.

You sat down as well. “So, are you feeling better?” He nodded and took a sip from his cup. “A lot,” he answered. “What happened?” You needed to know and he knew that. He shifted in his seat, trying to conceal his awkwardness.

“There was a man, a client.” He started, he couldn’t meet your eyes. “He was rough, really rough. He wanted me to do things, horrible things.” He stopped to swallow. “I couldn’t do it. I ran” he finished, tears evident.

“I followed you from the police station.” He added. You weren’t angry, not at all. You were glad that he felt like he could trust you, like you would help him. It wrenched your heart, the pain he must feel.

“I’m glad you did,” you said. His eyes met yours in a confused manner. “You’re not upset?” He asked, clearly confused. He just couldn’t get you.

“Why would I?” You shifted your weight a bit. “Why would I be upset that you felt like I could help you out?”

He cupped his mug and looked at you again. “Some may say I’m a burden.” You shook your head no. “Not me, I’m glad you trust me” he nodded.

Not that he had any other options but you were glad he took the chance as soon as he saw it.

“Don’t you have to work?” He broke the silence. You chuckled “it’s Sunday, I don’t work on Sundays.” He nodded. It was awful, the way you two were awkward with each other. How great, an introvert together with an introvert.

“I’ll ask a friend to bring some clothes, you can’t stay in those” you stood to put the mugs away and called your friend. It rang three times until he answered “What’s up?” He answered his phone. “Hey, Joon. I’m craving your wardrobe” you laughed. He chuckled, “Do you even have time to wear anything other than your uniform?” It was getting harder to coax Namjoon into lending you his stuff.

“Come on buddy, just a few shirts and a pair of sweatpants” he sighed and complied. “Alright, I’ll bring them tomorrow” you hummed in agreement. “Leave them with Arthur in the lobby and I’ll get it in the evening” he sighed “You’re working so much, there’s no time for me” you rolled your eyes playfully. “I’m free on Tuesday, let’s go eat” he cheered and accepted. “You shall be forgiven, I’ll see you on Tuesday”
