Friendly Fire

Alpha Brawl can be a great way to take out a large portion of your enemy’s creatures. Pick the largest (or second largest creature if the first is too big) creature they control, so most of the smaller ones should die, and since state-based actions aren’t checked in the middle, they’ll still deal damage to it (though Wither/Infect do put a damper on things) and hopefully clear the enemy’s board. If there’s no way to get the math to work in your favor, though, start looking at their smallest creatures, instead.

You can’t ever count on your opponent coming to a game with cards that will work in your favor, so make sure you put an ace up your own sleeve. (Not literally, this blog doesn’t condone cheating, even though it does condone pushing combos into a morally grey area at times. Seriously. There’s a really good article about NOT cheating.) If you give their smallest creature Deathtouch before Alpha Brawl is resolving, everything that isn’t Indestructible should die when Alpha Brawl resolves.

On the other hand, instead of just giving an ability, you could Harmless Offering (or Bizarre Trader, or Donate, or Zedruu, etc) an entire creature. Emberwilde Caliph works quite well, especially if they have many creatures it would be damaging.
