The Skeleton coast…. the name conjures up all sorts of demons and horrors in the mind’s eye and rightly so. It is one of the most treacherous coastlines in the world due to the strong crosscurrents, heavy swells and dense fogs caused by the ice-cold fast-flowing Benguela current. Conditions combine to form a deadly cocktail which has resulted in numerous shipwrecks dotting the coast, giving it the moniker – The Skeleton Coast. Amongst the many shipwrecks which lie along the  coast, the Zella is one of the more recent and therefore still in a well preserved state. The Zeila got stranded on 25 August 2008 just south of Henties Bay. The fishing trawler was sold as scrap metal to an Indian company but got stranded after it came loose from its towing line while on its way to Bombay. It is now home to many birds and forms a great foreground subject for photography.

Dark Nebula

Pictured here is the Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex, a dark nebula, and one of the nearest star forming regions to our own solar system. On the left edge of the image, Comet Clark (71p) stands out due to its greenish hue and small tail. Bright yellow Antares steals the show as the cool, giant star lights up this image.
