How much of your fandom shenanigans does your fiancé know about? I'm just starting to get used to the idea of my long term bf knowing of my fanfic reading habits, but not particularly my fandom history. Do you have any advice on this matter? I'm really defensive about it and I don't know how best to handle something him and our friends have always considered the butt of jokes, especially since it includes content he might be uninterested/uncomfortable with.
Hmmm, yeah it’s a tough one. I think on the one hand, it can help to be honest with your partner and open about your interests. (I’m the kind of person who can’t keep quiet about stuff I like, so it always comes up). My fiance knows about everything, but he hasn’t really experienced it. Like, he knows I read and write fic, but he’s never read any of it, and I definitely don’t share the content with him because a lot of it would squick him out. He is super helpful when I need to research military stuff though - he’s brainstormed with me for hours helping me figure out weapons and backstories.
On the other, fandom can be a really personal thing and a safe space, and sometimes you don’t want to muddy that up by mixing it with IRL stuff, especially if your friends make jokes about it - that really sucks. <3 I’ve never really had to deal with that part. Most of my friends are big nerds so they get it.
Anyone else have any fantastic fandom wisdom?
