Hey, Limes, I gotta know how can you possibly listen to a song associated with something horrible in your life and not have it constantly remind you of the bad thing?
Keep the song on your iPod
Put iPod on shuffle and/or listen to a playlist with the song on it
Whenever the song comes up, don’t skip it. Listen to the w h o l e t h i n g. Even if it makes you cry or scares you, let it happen. A song cannot actually hurt you. Listen with a friend if you have to. But try your best to focus on the beat and original spirit of the song - the reason you liked it in the first place. (Is there a certain “music video” or visual that used to play in your head whenever you listened to the song? Now would be a good time to think about that.)
The more you do this, the easier it is to treat the song as background noise to whatever you’re doing currently (brainstorming, doing chores, drawing, whatever you normally do while listening to music).
Keep this up and eventually you will associate the song with those new nice things more than with the old shitty thing.
The songs that I’ve had to do this for are songs that I associated with having seizures - they were songs that I had just downloaded around the times when the seizures happened. One in particular (On The Loose by Saga) was very hard to listen to because the sound effect at the beginning reminded me of my aura (the thing that happens right before the seizure). It’s a great song, but for a long time I just skipped it because hearing that sound effect would almost send me into an anxiety attack.
Forcing myself to listen to it was really fucking hard. But I knew that if I didn’t do it - not just for this song, but for all songs that I associate with seizures - it would cause me more pain in the long run and I would regret it. Not just because I couldn’t listen to the songs, but because of the principle of the thing. These songs had power over me. When I listen to the song now, I still briefly remember the seizure association, but it only lasts about a half a second before my focus moves back to the song itself. There’s never any panic.
(Nowadays I’ve gotten so accustomed to this process that I can usually nip it in the bud before the song even becomes a problem. The moment I find myself hating a song because it reminds me of a thing, I put that song on a loop and imagine the most badass Eridan vs Shitty-Self-Insert-OC battle scene I can muster.)
So, long story longer, it takes some discipline. But it is very possible, and worth it.
Tumblr’s not letting me reply but alphametics;
I think you might be right with the getting stuck theory :0 I just checked him again and the tufty patches are tree sap :0 And last time he got stuck, he lost his tag :p Just me being silly, seeing the scuffed nose and immediately thinking 'cat fight'! :p
