The Showy Death Camas (Zigadenus elegans) is found in the alpine zone of Glacier National Park. The name is derived from the fact that the bulbs of this wildflower are highly poisonous. Several species of camas are sometimes found growing together. The bulbs of the blue camas are edible and were often gathered by Native Americans as well as early settlers. However, with the bulbs of the poisonous and non-poisonous species having a similar appearance, if gathered in the fall when the plants were withered, the result was an unfortunate and often fatal mistake.
