November Juncos are lively and gregarious, as if on vacation from their normal routine to the north...before the serious business of survival begins with the arrival of harsh winter.
Song Sparrow
The warm-weather woodland songs have subsided. The pre-winter musical respite has begun. The Song Sparrow in winter seems to reluctantly hold back its favorite means of expression.

As autumn flows into November fewer butterflies are seen, yet this Painted Lady was observed in our apple orchard, seemingly reluctant to be on its way south.

The abrupt silence along the edge of the woods was a signal that a predator was in the vicinity. As usual all the sparrows were a step ahead of me in detecting the Northern Harrier doing a fly by overhead.

Swainson's Thrush
It was a surprise to find this Swainson's Thrush timidly hiding in the brush of Hickory Hills Park a few days ago. Normally they have all moved south by now, but perhaps our warm weather of late has delayed its migratory journey.
Rusty Blackbird
The Rusty Blackbird is primarily an insect eater during the warm months, however during the cold months it will eat berries. It is not understood why their population is down 90% over the last 40 years.
Gray Tree Frog
Here in Iowa it is time for the Gray Tree Frog to hibernate as most of its food supply has disappeared. To avoid damage from the cold the frog's liver converts glycogen to glycerol, which allows over 80% of the frog's body to freeze in a state of suspended animation without hurting the body cells.
