Shining out on the alpine bench in the cool display glasshouse of Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK, was a container of Primula 'Blindsee'. This is classified as a European Primula Hybrid which has long lasting flowers.

Discovered in 1903 by Ernest Henry Wilson, Corydalis wilsonii grows in China on cliffs. It is a perennial of subalpine or subarctic habitats with an almost succulent-like blue-green foliage. It needs excellent air circulation and here was growing in a cool glasshouse.

On the display bench of the cool glasshouse of Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK, was Oxalis hirta (tropical woodsorrel). This South African plants was introduced into cultivation in the 18th century. It has never become popular in cultivation probably because it is not reliably hardy and can have rather an untidy habit. The bulbs can become very large.

A green flowered daffodil, Narcissus viridiflorus, blooms in the Autumn, rather than Spring, and the flowers open at night. It is native to a small region around Gibraltar but here it was flowering in the cool glasshouse of Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK.

Another striking bulbous plant from South Africa is Scadoxus puniceus (paintbrush lily, snake lily). It is found along the coast and in river valleys and provides nectar for sunbirds, weavers and other birds. The plant is dormant in the winter but active in the summer when it needs moisture. Plants take about 4-5 years from seed to flowering.

The amazing flowers of Eucrosia mirabilis are blooming in the cool glasshouse of Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK. This plant is native to Ecuador, it grows on rocky hillsides and needs bright light with a well drained soil. The extremely elongated stamens and pistil create this dramatic inflorescence.
