May 26, 1647: First British colonialist executed for witchcraft hanged in Connecticut
On May 26, 1647, Alse Young was hanged as a witch in Windsor, Connecticut, the first person executed for witchcraft in the British colonies of North America. Records of her life are scant, though the source of the accusations appears to stem from her habit of making herbal remedies for sick friends. It seems likely that one of the underlying reasons for the accusation was the fact that, as a married woman without a son, she stood to inherit her husband's estate upon his death. She was brought to trial for witchcraft, convicted, and hanged in the Meeting House Square, where there Old State House stands today. Thirty years later, her daughter Alice Young Beaman would likewise be accused of witchcraft. The fear of witches in the English colonies would later culminate in the Salem witch trials of the 1690s, during which dozens were accused and twenty were executed.
