Oh, actually there was some discussion going on the other day about this exactly!
So ‘boku’ is typically used by boys and young men (I think around high school or college age many switch to use ‘ore’ in casual circumstances). But, it’s also used by girls sometimes (idk what the age range would be since it’s not super common). I’m not sure how prevalent that usage is in girls nowadays, but I know that it’s gone up overall in recent years.
So I think while arguments can be made for any interpretation, it was probably wisest choice on the part of the translators to keep it neutral.
