my music headcanons bc why not

Leo listens to pretty much every genre but he has a soft spot for classic rock because his mom would listen to it while working

Nico doesn’t actually like emo music, he likes jazz and instrumental math rock (for example, he’d like Giraffes? Giraffes! But not the kind of math rock that overlaps with post-hardcore)

I’ve said this one before, but Jason’s music taste gets him accused of being a performative male. Think Mitski, Phoebe Bridgers, Clairo, etc etc

Piper’s favorite artist is Fiona Apple. This seems so obvious to me that I feel like it must be mentioned in canon but if it is idk where

Reyna LOVES Linkin Park. She’s secretly emo. She has some favorite pop artists too but she LOOVES Linkin Park and also MCR and also probably Pierce the Veil

Percy likes ska and pop punk. Not a surprise. But he also likes yacht rock. Do not play Steely Dan near this man bc he WILL start dancing

Thalia got Annabeth into post-hardcore. Now it’s the only thing she listens to when she’s studying or working on her Olympus redesign

Thalia’s music taste expands after she joins the hunters. She still loves her punk & hardcore music but she also starts listening to what the other hunters like: 20s jazz, 80s New Wave, even some modern pop artists like Olivia Rodgrigo

Hazel likes music with a lot of instrumentals and lofi sounding stuff because it grounds her. ((In my fic I allude to her being a Dolly Parton fan, but this was actually a misunderstanding Jason had abt Frank taking her to Dollywood (they were going for the rollercoasters). But I also think she could be a Dolly Parton fan. Who isn’t? She has a timeless voice))

Frank doesn’t listen to music. But he still walks around wearing headphones with nothing playing just so people don’t talk to him

Always funny to me when people say that Jason doesn't have any favorite music artists because he has no personality (an inference they make from him being preppy). Like no, it just means he probably doesn't primarily listen to the alt music [and being preppy doesn't mean you don't have a personality? ijbol]. Preppy people have music tastes too. I would know, I am (loosely) preppy. And I do think he would listen to music some people might loosely call alternative, because (as we've discussed before) he's definitely listening to sad boy music (The Smiths, light rock bands of the 70s-2000s, etc.).

Exactly!! Jason has a personality (even if he’s repressed it lol) plus everyone listens to music!! (Except ig the people who claim they don’t, but I’ve never understood that, like of all the music to ever exist, you don’t like any of it?? I digress)

I think him being relatively sheltered at Camp Jupiter means that he probably hasn’t had much exposure to a variety of music, not that he doesn’t like music at all. Which is part of why I headcanon him as being really into sad indie music and The Smiths, because I think it’s pretty likely that legacy kids at CJ were playing whatever is popular in the mortal world, and artists like Clairo and Mitski are just what resonated with him the most. And I think he would LOVE yacht rock (who doesn’t love yacht rock??), despite the irony of the circumstances surrounding his death…

I also think it’s unlikely that alt music is super popular at CJ, like I doubt they were bumping songs about anarchy and overthrowing the government, considering, yknow… the political structure of camp 💀 So who knows, Jason might actually like alt music! Maybe not the harder stuff, at least at first, but I can see him being into Fall Out Boy at least. (That being said, I do have a headcanon that Reyna LOVES Linkin Park, so it’s not that alt is unheard of there, just not popular, but again, I digress)

AND on the topic of being preppy vs alt, I recently watched SLC punk and Mike (the outwardly preppy character) is exactly how I’ve always pictured Jason. The clothes, the haircut, the glasses, him switching from being really sweet to being ready to throw hands as soon as someone says his friend is in trouble— I was watching it like wow that’s literally Jason. So yeah, it’s actually possible to be a prep in appearance but alt at heart! Anyone who says otherwise is a POSER!!!
