Applying for Arizona Medicaid through Healthcare.gov
The Healthcare.gov site is not transmitting data to the Arizona Medicaid agency at this time.
If you applied for health insurance on the Marketplace and received a notice indicating that you are potentially eligible for Medicaid through the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), you will need to file a separate AHCCCS application. You can do this online at Health-e-Arizona or submit a paper application directly to the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES).
The online application is a bit slow and cumbersome, but it can pull employment data that your employer has reported to the Unemployment Insurance office, and you can upload verification documents directly into the application, which may save you some application processing time.
You may also apply for Nutrition Assistance (formerly known as food stamps) and Cash Assistance using these applications. If you apply for either of these programs, an interview is required, and may be conducted via telephone or in person at your local DES office. If you are only applying for AHCCCS Health Insurance, no interview is necessary.
The eligibility criteria and verification requirements for each of these programs differ. For example, when you apply for Nutrition Assistance, you are required to provide information about your assets (bank accounts, home, vehicles, stocks, etc.). For AHCCCS Health Insurance, however, you only need to provide information about your income (in addition to other non-financial information required by all programs, like Social Security numbers and birthdates).
DES must process your application within 45 days after the date on which it is submitted.
If you or a family member are in need of long-term medical care, such as is provided in a nursing facility, assisted living facility, a group home for individuals developmental disabilities, or other similar arrangement, you may qualify to receive medical assistance through the Arizona Long Term Care System (ALTCS), a division of AHCCCS.
To qualify, you need to meet certain medical and financial criteria (both income and assets), and the eligibility process can be very complex and time-consuming. Please see our website for more information about who is eligible and contact us if you need assistance with your application.
