Altered Natives feat. Aisling Stephenson - Naked (House Dub)
(BIG HATE/SPACE)
TUNES OF 2015. Danny Yorke is one of those people who I’d be glad to have around in the music world even if his music wasn’t sublime. A an even-more-awkward-shaped-than-square peg in a round hole, he refuses to play the promo and schmoozing game, instead choosing to project a grouchy, take-no-shit social media persona, sort of like a techno game Jerry Sadowitz, endlessly self-sabotaging but full of off-colour funnies and awkward home truths. But his music IS sublime. I strongly suspect that if he was a middle class white kid, or a Berlin hair-care product model, he’d be coining it in from this music - the In the Place Where Love Once Lived album is easily the match for Levon Vincent, Ben Klock or any other current techno don you care to name, with an added streak of piratical London rawness running through it, and frequent sharp left turns into emotionally devastating territory to boot. It is, basically, a fucking amazing album, from a fucking amazing producer.
