Trafalgar Law: ISTJ [The Inspector] One Piece
Pensive Fine presents an Alternative Type
(Analysis is a response to this ask: Why did you type Law as ENTP?)
I disagree with Trafalgar Law being an ENTP and would think ISTJ. You provide little concrete examples where Law uses dominate Ne. You claim that he neither intricately plans nor has a consistent follow through yet from what we have seen of Law’s character, he does both of these. His Si makes him quite cautious of the future and deliberate in his planning to ensure that everything goes alright. In the event of capture in Punk Hazard, he has a set of regular iron chains to put on to trick Caesar into thinking he has Sealstone chains. His plan to take down Kaito is quite layered and direct, with a clear step by step process.
He doesn’t like it when Luffy acts spontaneously- for it not only ruins the plan but also makes it difficult for him to predict the outcome.
Such examples include when Luffy announces that he would capture Caesar or knocking Caesar away with the Elephant Gun instead of just capturing him. He also is baffled by how carefree and nonchalant the Straw Hats are, how they think they can tackle the realities of the New World without a decent plan. Yes he can seize opportunities as they come (seeing the potential in allying with Luffy, or saving Luffy’s life in Marineford because he had a feeling he would play an important role in the future) but he has a preference for preparation. He prefers to deal with facts and reality rather than go into idle speculation on abstracts.
Why do you say Law does not have the conceptual and linear-ness of Te logic? Your evidence for Fe is not strong enough. As a child, he didn’t care about integrating into the Donquixote Family to be liked/approval in a Fe way, rather it is because they provided him the resources/protection (Te). For the most part, he hardly had any relationship with any of the crew there until Corazon. Law does not care that much about provoking reactions in people.
He generally keeps his feelings to himself (for they are private) rather than have an external focus on them (to a group or awareness of other people’s feelings). He doesn’t bother trying to integrate himself that much into the Straw Hat’s dynamics and prefers to keep to himself. I found it interesting that even though he was given the opportunity by Fujitora to just say the Straw Hats were his subordinates, Law refuses to do so.
Perhaps Law has his own personal standards of integrity he refuses to betray, to go against it would be inauthentic (Fi). At one point he breaks off his alliance with the Straw Hats because he did not want to endanger their lives in an affair that was private to him (his personal revenge against Doflamingo).
You said his main source of conflict is about rebelling against perceived norms and expectations. I think that is a little exaggerated. Rather Law gets stressed out when gets get too chaotic and out of hand with too many possibilities to deal with (inferior Ne).
Fictionalcharactermbti Response: There are a lot of valid points within this evaluation. It pokes a lot of holes in the ENTP analysis. That I cannot help but agree with. I disagree that it is ISTJ, but purpose INTJ.
Although Law needs a plan and is linear, it is not evidence of Si. What I am seeing is dominant Ni instead. He is an innovator and always willing to try new things. He isn’t stubborn to do what is proven. The dominant intuition is still there, but I mistook him for being expansive instead of focused/determined.
He only lets people judge him if they have proven themselves to be on his level. This explains the limited amount of people he allows into his heart. Although an ISTJ would be hesitant around Luffy and the gang, the amount of judgment he places on them resembles inferior Se, rather than inferior Ne. INTJs with inferior Se often look down on those who give into their impulses. It isn’t that they are chaotic, but that they seem childish in behavior to him.
Although this isn’t how he operates and is annoyed he sees the value in their style and is still open to it when it works to his advantage and his plans.
I see a lot of Ni-Fi going on in his sentimental connection to Corazoan. It is the meaning of this relationship that inspires and pushes him throughout his life.
I need to sit on this more, but you have changed my mind. He is not ENTP. But I think I am leaning more towards INTJ. Official retyping to come.
I want to thank you for submitting your thoughts, for your hard work, and passion.
