Mabel forgave Thē too quickly lowkey. As someone who also went through the teenage best friend breakup, if my ex best friend made a song saying that I wished I was her, moved into my building and taunted my lifestyle by throwing her sucess in my face she would be the next murder in the building.
Mabel in seasons 1-4: My dad was dying of cancer and my parents lied to me about it until they couldn't anymore. He died and my mom was so depressed she literally didn't leave her bedroom for six months. We watched the same TV show in different rooms. I made myself scrambled eggs everyday because that's all I knew how to make. I was seven. I started staying with my aunt over school breaks but she also left me by myself all the time. After years I made a few friends. One of them died and another one got blamed for it. Our other friend saw what really happened but wouldn't say anything about it for reasons that were incomprehensible to me at the time. I lost 10 years of my life because I didn't know what really happened or why he lied. Also, I got accused of killing an old women and for a while I thought maybe I had done it because I blocked out what actually happened.
Mabel in season 5: My middle school best friend turned against me and told lies about me in high school. That's why I have trust issues and can't make friends with people my own age.
I think, so far, Althea fits into Mabel's backstory in a way that is fine--it doesn't retcon anything and we hadn't heard about any friends in Bayport before--but also doesn't add anything to Mabel's character.
The stated reason Althea is there is to explore why Mabel has a hard time trusting people (or rather says she does; the evidence isn't there but that's a post for another time.) But that wasn't remotely a mystery. All at once her best friend died, her other best friend went to prison for it, and her third best friend saw what really happened but wouldn't say anything about it for reasons that were indecipherable to her. Even before that, her dad was dying of cancer and her parents lied to her about it. We do not need another backstabbing friend to explain why Mabel struggles to make friends her own age.
Maybe it'll add something to her character by the season's end, but I'm not optimistic on that front.
Don't even like Althea but sad they apparently cut that scene where she was wearing that Pfree Pflug shirt that we saw in the promo.
I'm hoping it turns out that Mabel knew Althea in Bayport and she just sometimes tagged along to the Arconia. It would bother me if the writers just shoved her into the Hardy Boys dynamic when it was made clear how 'exclusive' that bunch was, and how it was just Mabel and Tim before Zoe and Oscar joined them.

How miserable was Mabel in Bayport that she chose to go back to the Arconia the summer after Zoe died and she lost all her friends there?
Trying to make sense of this timeline and… it doesn't. (As is a theme with this season.) Mabel was 28 in season 1 and Zoe died 10 years previously. So she died when Mabel was 18. But she went back to high school after the summer… so I guess she was held back a grade at some point? She then mentions being 32, even though it has only been about one month since the events at the end of season 3, wherein she turned 30. (April 4th per Mabel's hospital bracelet in her dream to May 4th par Oliver's texts to Lester on his wedding.)
Kind of funny that Althea treating Mabel poorly after Zoe died put her off having friends when currently Mabel's only friend her own age is the guy who kinda-sorta-maybe-accidently killed Zoe. I wonder if they'll do anything with that. (They won't.)
Someone on Reddit said that in the podcast Beanie Feldstein alluded to her character being related to the Dimases. They didn't say what they meant by that, and I don't think she actually did do that. Nevertheless, I now have a crack theory that Althea is another one of Teddy's illegitimate children.
