A Alton Ellis - What Does It Take To Win Your Love
B Tommy McCook - Reggae Merengue
Since the late 1950s, many iconic Jamaican hits have been derived from popular foreign songs. The original pop and soul melodies found favor among listeners on the island, prompting reggae artists to produce their own versions.
Alton Ellis was one such artist who transformed covers into enduring hits. One notable song he interpreted is What Does It Take (To Win Your Love), a hit by Jr. Walker & the All Stars from 1969. Alton's single was launched in Jamaica and the UK in 1970 under the Treasure Isle and Duke Reid labels, respectively. In this rendition, Alton's vocal talent shines through, complemented by sweet harmonies. A different take on What Does It Take To Win Your Love also surfaced in 1971 on his Studio One album Sunday Morning.
Similar to its first release, the reissued 7" single features the lively Calypso instrumental Reggae Merengue by Tommy McCook & The Supersonics on the B-side. This track is actually a well-done slowed-down version of Orquesta Ritmos de Sabana's Cogeme la Cane.
