Today… Did you know it is always today? Yesterday was today. When tomorrow gets here it will be today. Today is all we have.
Really, we only have right now. This moment. When the next moment gets here it is this moment. See what I mean?
I used to live in yesterday and tomorrow. I was either regretting what I had done in…

always today
And then it was April Four years on I was still in the bath But the cat was gone.
Two herons flew clean between sky and me Supposedly liminal too Belonging to neither world like She One me The other one you?
Then woke this morning Firmly set in my way That this was the end This was the day
For what I couldn’t really tell Just that your name was the fall And I lay face down in my own heavy dwell For the life I couldn’t recall
I came to the alter Reversed my mind I asked for some clearance Tried to be kind
Only heard in the silence Still the elusive you I mean something was different But nothing was new
I fancied the herons had flown to the north And that ponds and lakes were the scene I boarded a bus and took to the hill And saw you behind every tree
Heart jumping and jerking Sure and unfounded Feeling absurd Resigned and ungrounded
I boarded again But got off for a pee Bumped into an old friend I didn’t need to see
Then it actually dawned As I left her weirdly She had been in the dream too This bit I knew clearly
Her and a boy A young suitor of mine Who’d been around a lot In La Niña’s time
Good lord Holy shit Fuck this I’m a mess Got home Ate broth Tried on the new dress
And turning on lights I clock the date The day, the month the year And gleam but wince at the four years since La Niña made her home here
And I was waking Then as now With your name and face Still creasing my brow
So I come to the end And I run a fresh bath I’m back here in April Ever the aftermath
Feet in the corner of that Battered old frame Overlooking that church Where nobody came
If I’d have known I’d still be not quite poor Would I have ventured A prayer through that door?
Nearly, I stay Because today’s the day! Today is always nearly the day.

Regardless of whether you are a student or a teacher the lessons don’t stop when school lets out. The most important lessons are often the ones we…
