Self-Forgotten Self is a Self
As someone who naturally empathizes, my fear is that I won’t truly be a self.
This is giving in to the philosophical idolatry: “Know Thyself”; “I think, therefore I am”.
I’m afraid I’ll be forgotten by everyone – or even, forgotten by myself.
The ironic reality is that self-forgetfulness is true freedom (Keller, again – see also C. S. Lewis’ description of a truly humble person from ‘Mere Christianity’)
A self-forgotten self is more truly a self.
Maybe: “I forget, therefore I am.”
But, “i am not ‘I am’.” … i am not …
I’m sorry, what were you saying?
