kate  carries  within  her  distinct  aversion  to  enumerating  principles  by  which  she  lives  her  life   -------   a  consequence,   perhaps,     of  working  for  a  man  who  mandates  a  litany  of  his  own  sacred  rules.       yet  of  them,   she  herself  is  self - aware  and  steadfast,    diligent  in  upholding,    even  if  she  herself  stands  as  her  sole  witness.        one  of  these  tenants :      leave  work  at  the  door.       shed  as  she  steps  over  the  threshold  of  her  apartment,     the  heels,    the  coat,    the  badge,    the  weight  of  the  day.     doesn’t  mention  work  business,     doesn’t  stir  pots  of  drama,     doesn’t  check  room  corners.      such  separation  she  extends  to  her  friends,    offers  as  a  safe  space  from  the  long  days.

it’s  what  she  offers  amanda  tonight,     as  she has  on  many  before.     tonight,   they  went  out  and  picked  up  pizza  from  the  good  parlor  on  the  other  side  of  town,    too  far  for  delivery.       she  drove,    eyes  trained  on  the  road  with  additional  diligence  to  compensate  for  rainy  downpour,    while  amanda  rode  shotgun,    pie  on  her  lap  and  weight  on  her  shoulders.       the  heaviness  hasn’t  lifted,     kate  observes,    wiping  her  fingers  on  the  clean  edge  of  a  cloth  napkin  in  her  lap.        a  situation  silence  doesn’t  suit.      for  another’s  benefit,     rules  are  meant  to  be  bent.
