Quick guide for new Pierre Niney fans:
I had seen him in Altamira, a nice small role where he's a lovely painter. Recommended, at least his bit. The movie has some pace problems but its story is relevant.
by @allthefights (can you see Antonio Banderas?)
I swear I do watch dozens of french movies per year and never had seen him again (never actively looked for him either). Until...
I guess now he's got a lot of new fans who want to see him again... (Just like me...)
Here are my discoveries so far:
It boy: I love Virginie Efira and romcoms and Niney but if one doesn't expect much one enjoys it more. BUT in the crisis scene near the end one sees Niney was already a great actor in his 20s.
Comme des Fréres: is bland and Niney is not very good in it!!! But still is a well meant little comedy.
Amants: it's not a perfect thriller, a bit insipid ?(to my taste) but all the actors are good. Dark Niney not just sexy. Convincing too.
Sauver ou Périr: beautiful drama, well paced, wonderfully acted (but in their last scene I had the impression Anaïs Demoustier was going to crack up!!!) recommended and it's so lovely to see them again. Great actors with great chemistry.
Masquerade and OSS Africa: Bedos the director is the kind of bad tasted dude that thinks he's going to teach us how to be a feminist. Watch at your own risk. Still, Niney is cute in them.
Odissey: is so boring I've abandoned it.
Franz: beware of awards. Niney looks goofy and I dislike it bc it's not well written, save the part they directly copied from the original movie by Jean Renoir, which is the part that has given it its awards. I do warmly recommend The Great Dream by Jean Renoir.
J'aime regarder Les filles: boring and stupid.
The promise at dawn: haven't seen it bc @mzannthropy said the mother was manipulative and I hate that so much. But Niney has a confrontation with Bastien Bouillon! Someday I'll watch that bit.
Deux moi: 5 minute role in which he shines showing great memory and comedy
Still to watch Goliath and Black Box. They say they're good.
Edit: it's so funny that I forgot about YSL , his Cesar award. I did watch it like 5 years before Le Comte and I was totally impervious to Niney and so totally forgot about him
@mzannthropy I want to see The Perfect Man too although I do remember thinking at the time the premise was the typical stupid thing they invent about writers. I never imagined I'd be a fan of the main actor!!
