New phone alert: Droid 3

I'm one of those people who got the original Droid when it came out. I liked it a lot, but lately the battery had been dying really fast and in general it was starting to crap out on me.

I had been planning to upgrade the weekend between my old job and my new job (new job, new phone, right?), when Brian told me that Motorola would soon be coming out with the Droid Razr. The combination of two of my favorite cell phones of all time? Yes, please!

So I decided to wait until the Droid Razr launched on 11.11.11. (Precisely at 11:11 a.m., which is annoying, because the store opens at 10). I was off that day for Veterans Day (first perk of new job: bank holidays), so I stopped by Verizon to check it out. Not at 11:11. I'm not that much of a fangirl.

And...I didn't like it. Sure, it was really thin, but it's very wide to compensate. I felt like I was holding my old Blackberry, which just brought back bad memories. And no QWERTY keyboard. And $270 with my $30 discount. No thank you. I could see getting it if I were a dude with huge hands who puts his cellphone in his pocket, but I am none of those things.

So then it was between the iPhone 4S and Droid 3. I decided to get neither at the store so I could think about it a little more. I went home that weekend and checked out Amazon Wireless, their beta site for ordering and activating cell phones.

The Droid 3 was so much cheaper than it would be in the store -- $80 vs. $170 with my "loyalty discount." (An aside: New Every Two used to get you $100 off a new phone. Now you get a $30 coupon. What the crap is that?) And, because it's Amazon, no tax (while that lasts). I'm grandfathered in to my old unlimited data for $30 plan, which is great.

I got it in the mail two days later, activated it myself, and have been playing around with it ever since. I synced it up to my work e-mail this week and, even more exciting, I downloaded a ringtone--the piano intro to November Rain.
